Who is Joseph Schooling’s girlfriend? Know everything about his love life

The first and only Olympic gold medal winner for Singapore, Joseph Schooling, revealed on Tuesday that he has retired from swimming at the age of 28. The first and only Olympic gold medal winner for Singapore, Joseph Schooling, revealed on Tuesday that he has retired from swimming at the age of 28. Known as “Singapore’s Flying Fish” in the city-state, Schooling shocked the swimming community by defeating Michael Phelps, his childhood idol, to win the 100-meter butterfly at the Rio Olympics in 50.39 seconds. After 2016, Schooling struggled to replicate that degree of international success, taking home only a bronze medal from the 2017 world championships and losing in the opening round of his title defense at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

In the eight years after Rio, the losses have outnumbered the wins, but Schooling will retire with three gold medals from the Asian Games and 29 from the Southeast Asian Games. Due to two other swimmers’ quicker times, Schooling was left off the Singapore squad for the postponed Asian Games in Hangzhou last year. He called it “a bummer” and said he wasn’t sure what to do going into another Olympic year, according to the Straits Times. Joseph Schooling became the first person from Singapore to win an Olympic gold medal in 2016 when he won the 100-meter butterfly event in Rio. Schooling became an overnight national hero after defeating elite competitors, such as the renowned American swimmer Michael Phelps, and shattering the Olympic record with a time of 50.39 seconds.

Best Domestic Finish

Schooling became the first Singaporean to win an Olympic gold medal when she won the 100-meter butterfly on August 12, 2016, in Rio de Janeiro, with a timing of 50.39 seconds. Phelps’ 2008 Summer Olympics record of 50.58 seconds was beaten by the time, setting a new Olympic record. Schooling was the quickest qualifier for the final, swimming 50.83 seconds in the semi-finals on August 11, 2016. The time was a personal best, a record for the event, a record for the country, a record for Asia, and the quickest time ever recorded in 2016, however, it lasted just one day as Schooling beat him in the final.

Best International Finish

Schooling excelled at the University of Texas, a 12-time NCAA champion, and the Bolles School. Although he took home a bronze in the 100 fly at the 2015 World Championships, it was nothing compared to what he accomplished in Rio de Janeiro the following summer. He beat Michael Phelps and the rest of the field in the final, setting an Olympic record in 50.39 seconds. He was the inaugural Singaporean athlete to secure a gold medal at the Olympics. In 2017, he captured another bronze medal at the Worlds, and from 2021 onward, he dominated the Southeast Asian Games. However, he failed to get past the semifinals in the 2019 World Championships. At the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, he placed 39th in the 100 freestyle and 44th in the 100 fly. Under the Multi-Million Dollar Award Programme (MAP), the Singapore National Olympic Council granted Schooling S$1 million (about US$740,000). Of that amount, 20% had to be returned to the Singapore Swimming Association for use in upcoming training and development. According to some, Singapore’s “rewards for sports excellence” are the biggest Olympic cash incentive anywhere. Schooling was subject to the NCAA’s stringent regulations prohibiting collegiate athletes from taking prize money while competing as a swimmer for the University of Texas. Schooling did, however, earn his nation’s honor because it qualified for the NCAA’s award to international students exemption.
