Schooling excelled at the University of Texas, a 12-time NCAA champion, and the Bolles School. Although he took home a bronze in the 100 fly at the 2015 World Championships, it was nothing compared to what he accomplished in Rio de Janeiro the following summer. He beat Michael Phelps and the rest of the field in the final, setting an Olympic record in 50.39 seconds. He was the inaugural Singaporean athlete to secure a gold medal at the Olympics. In 2017, he captured another bronze medal at the Worlds, and from 2021 onward, he dominated the Southeast Asian Games. However, he failed to get past the semifinals in the 2019 World Championships. At the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, he placed 39th in the 100 freestyle and 44th in the 100 fly. Under the Multi-Million Dollar Award Programme (MAP), the Singapore National Olympic Council granted Schooling S$1 million (about US$740,000). Of that amount, 20% had to be returned to the Singapore Swimming Association for use in upcoming training and development. According to some, Singapore’s “rewards for sports excellence” are the biggest Olympic cash incentive anywhere. Schooling was subject to the NCAA’s stringent regulations prohibiting collegiate athletes from taking prize money while competing as a swimmer for the University of Texas. Schooling did, however, earn his nation’s honor because it qualified for the NCAA’s award to international students exemption.
