FISU Summer World University Games: Nations which have dominated the event

The FISU World University Games is a global multi-sport event for university athletes, organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), formerly known as the Universiade. The former title of the games is a blend of “University” and “Olympiad”. As part of new branding in July 2020, FISU announced that the Universiade would officially adopt the name FISU World University Games.

The latest edition of the FISU Summer World University Games took place in Naples, Italy, back in 2019. The 2021 Summer World University Games had been scheduled to unfold in Chengdu, China. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event has been postponed three times. This rescheduling follows the postponement of the Summer World University Games in 2023, which were originally slated for Yekaterinburg, Russia. But, it got delayed due to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to the FISU’s official website, the Summer World University Games 2023 are currently postponed.

Most recent edition of the games

Tagged as Chengdu 2021, the XXXI Summer World University Games or the 2021 Summer World University Games are an ongoing multi-sport event approved by the FISU. These games got underway from July 28 to August 8, 2023, in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. This will mark the fourth instance of China hosting the games (with previous hosts being Beijing in 2001, Harbin in 2009, and Shenzhen in 2011). It will be the first instance the event is called the Summer World University Games differing from the traditional Summer Universiade.

The FISU decided to push the event to 2023 due to ongoing concerns related to COVID-19. As a result, these games will essentially replace the 2023 Summer World University Games that were originally supposed to occur in Yekaterinburg, but were canceled due to the Russian incursion into Ukraine. Despite the shift, the event will still bear the designation of the 2021 Games.

The grand opening ceremony took place on the evening of 28 July 2023 at the newly built Dong’an Lake Stadium, which took over from Chengdu Stadium as the primary sports venue in the city. The closing ceremony is set to be held on the evening of 8 August 2023, in the Chengdu Open Air Music Park.

The games are being hosted across several locations, including Dong’an Lake Sports Center, Shuangliu District, Xindu District, Wuhou District, Jinniu District, Pidu District, Longquanyi District, Xinjin District, Qingbaijiang District, Wenjiang District, Jinjiang District, Chengdu Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone, Qingyang District, and Jianyang County.
