Asian Games 2022: Women’s kabbadi team clinch gold medal; claim the 100th medal

India continued their impressive run at the Asian Games 2022, Hangzhou by clinching the gold medal at the women’s kabbadi. The women’s team fought a very inspirational and ferocious Chinese Taipei side to be the champions. Although India possessed a superior presence on the pitch in terms of the vast experience that they had, the Taipei team did not back down. In the end, the match was decided by just a solo point difference between the two teams. The fans were riveted to their TV sets after seeing such a thrilling encounter. At a greater level, it also demonstrated the reach of kabbadi on a global stage.

What happened in the match?

Indian women’s Kabbadi overcame stiff resistance from the team of Chinese Taipei to churn out a 1-point difference win. This was the women’s kabaddi team’s third title triumph in the continental showpiece, doing one better than its runner-up finish in the last edition of the Games in Indonesia. Subsequently, the women in blue fulfilled the country’s expectations of touching the historic three-figure mark for the first time. It was a very difficult outing for the Indian women as Chinese Taipei pushed them to the limit in the final. The Taipei team missed out on the top prize by just a solitary point.

The Indian team showed nerves of steel in the last two raids to seal the contest in its favour. It also demonstrated the vast amount of experience that the Indian team had under their belt. India had a five-point lead going into halftime. It was courtesy of a super raid from Pooja, who was one of the stars of the intense title showdown. It also saw the team’s coach being cautioned with a green card. However, in the dying minutes of the penultimate time, Taipei’s Feng demonstrated that they will not be backing down even if the opposition is a heavyweight like India.

Feng went into the raid again and caught Sakshi in the left corner to level the tie at 24-24. At this point, only a few seconds remained which ensured a stalemate. Pushpa then claimed a touch which was sent for review. Subsequently, the point was given in favour of India. Now, with 20 seconds left in the final, Taipei then sent Lin into the raid who was not successful in getting a point. However, on the other hand, India’s seasoned campaigner Pushpa got one back for India to take a 2-point lead 26-24. In the end, India gave an easy point to Chinese Taipei but snatched the gold medal from them to win the game 26-25.
