International Career

Early in his career, Schooling participated in a Singapore Sports Council program. He received coaching and swimming instruction from Australian coaches under the supervision of Monash University. Schooling’s winning performance in the 200 flies at the 2011 Southeast Asian Games, qualified her for the 2012 London Olympics. Regretfully, he was unable to advance to the semi-finals due to his poor performance in his heats. There swimming authorities prohibited him from using his goggles and swimming cap. This resulted in him having to hunt for new ones mere minutes before the competition. As a freshman, Schooling qualified for the NCAA Championship. He won three gold and a bronze medals in the NCAA Championships after being awarded the Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Year. Joseph won an NCAA individual title in 44.51 seconds, winning the 100-yard butterfly. He just defeated Jack Conger, a teammate, by 0.4 seconds in a Texas-dominated championship. The Longhorns placed 1-2-3-4, 6, and 8 in the competition, which is the most players any team has ever fielded in an NCAA Championships A final. He won the gold in the 200 fly and finished the butterfly double.
