Nguyen Huy Hoang to be Vietnam’s flag bearer at Asiad 2022

Swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang is all set to be the flag bearer for Vietnam during the opening ceremony of the Asian Games 2022 slated to be held on September 23. At the age of just 23, Hoang will be leading the charge for Vietnam at the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou. In the last edition of the Games which took place in Jakarta-Palembang in 2018, the swimmer bagged two medals – silver in the men’s 1500m freestyle and bronze in the men’s 800m freestyle. He also represented Vietnam at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in both 800 and 1500m events.

Nguyen Huy Hoang is also the holder of the Vietnam National record in the 400 m freestyle, 800m freestyle, and 1500m freestyle events. In addition, he has collected eight gold and two silver medals at the Southeast Asian Games. Nguyen Huy Hoang was also the Youth Olympic champion in the boys’ 800 m freestyle in the Youth Summer Olympics in 2018 in Buenos Aires.

What is Vietnam aiming for at the Asian Games 2022?

The nation Vietnam aims to secure between two to five gold medals in Hangzhou Asian Games 2022. In the previous edition of the Games, Vietnam had an impressive haul of five gold, 15 silver, and 19 bronze medals. The nation’s delegation this year comprises 337 athletes and 90 coaches, who will compete across 31 disciplines. Several sports like sepak takraw, xiangqi, shooting, cycling, karate, weightlifting, and archery carry promise based on meticulous evaluations and projections done by the national coaching staff.

Who are the medal hopes for Vietnam at the Asian Games 2022?

The Vietnamese xiangqi team, comprising Lại Lý Huynh, Nguyễn Thành Bảo, Nguyễn Minh Nhật Quang, Nguyễn Hoàng Yến, Lê Thị Kim Loan, and Nguyễn Thị Phi Liêm will be representing, each with experience from the World Championships 2022 and the most recent Asian Championships. Other standout athletes include 2017 Taekwondo world silver medallist Trương Thị Kim Tuyền, Southeast Asian Games tennis gold medalist Lý Hoàng Nam, and prominent archer Ðỗ Thị Ánh Nguyệt, who are all expected to win medals at the event.

The Asian Games 2022 is set to kick off from September 23 until its culmination with the closing ceremony on October 8, 2023. Originally, the Games were planned for September 10 to September 25, of the previous year. However, the Asian Games 2022 had to be postponed by a year owing to pandemic-related challenges in the host nation.
