Indian Table tennis: Twitter Reacts on India women’s table tennis team securing historic Paris Olympics 2024 quota in table tennis team events

The Indian women’s table tennis teams have earned spots for the Paris 2024 Olympics based on their world rankings, as confirmed by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) on Monday. This will be the first time Indian teams will compete in table tennis at the Olympics since the team events began in 2008 in Beijing. Ranked 15th and 13th globally, the Indian women’s teams snagged their Olympic spots due to their positions in the March rankings.

There will be 16 teams vying for medals in both the men’s and women’s events in Paris. If teams don’t make it through the usual qualifying events, they can still get to the Olympics if their rankings are high enough. Alongside the Indian women’s team, Thailand (ranked 11), Poland (12), and Sweden (15) also got through this way. For the men’s competition, Croatia (ranked 12) and Slovenia (11) managed to secure their places.

Despite missing a chance last month at the World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals when they did not get to the quarterfinals, the Indian teams got their Olympic spots through their rankings. This also means India gets two extra spots in both the men’s and women’s singles events in Paris. However, it’s up to the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of each country to decide if an athlete will go to the Olympics. They pick who gets to be part of their national team.

The table tennis action in Paris will kick off with the round of 16. Meanwhile, at the last Olympics in Tokyo 2020, India sent a four-person table tennis group, including Sharath Kamal, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, Sutirtha Mukherjee, and Manika Batra. But they only took part in the singles and mixed doubles competitions. India has not yet won an Olympic medal in table tennis.
