Manchester United stats: Erik ten Hag’s side have lost all away games against top nine sides in Premier League

There are plenty of positives to take from Manchester United’s current season under Erik ten Hag, however, their away form is not one of them. The Red Devils have been extremely poor in away games in the Premier League this campaign. If it is narrowed down to top sides in the division then United’s run of results down the road has been a major cause for concern. To put it into better context, Manchester United have lost all away games against the top nine sides in the League this season. They have played only six of the current top nine teams till now and have tasted defeat in all of them. Let us take a closer look at those defeats:

Brentford (0-4) – August 2022

It was the first away game in the Premier League for Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager. Safe to say that the trip did not go according to plan for the Red Devils. United were not able to handle Brentford’s high-pressing and physical game. Their defence started to crumble under pressure and conceded an alarming four first half goals to lose the game. Since that setback, Man United have made an impressive turnaround, however, their away run continues to be a big concern.

Manchester City (3-6) – October 2022

Just when things started to look good, ten Hag and his boys suffered a major reality check at the hands of their neighbours. In the Manchester derby, Pep Guardiola’s side ripped apart Manchester United’s defence and comprehensively took a 6-1 lead. Man United did score two late goals to make the scoreline look less painful. Either way, the scars from that loss will not be forgotten anytime soon.

EPL stats: Who are the current longest serving managers in Premier League?

Aston Villa (1-3) – November 2022

Manchester United were victims of a new manager effect when they travelled to Villa Park. In what was Unai Emery’s first match in charge of Aston Villa, the home side put up a spirited display to overcome the Red Devils’ challenge on the evening. With the players giving their all on the day to impress the new manager, United players were simply not able to cope with the energy level of the home side.

Arsenal (2-3) – January 2023

This was a tightly-fought affair. Manchester United were in impressive form coming into this fixture but they had received a major blow with their star holding midfielder Casemiro being suspended for this game. Despite his absence, the Red Devils kept going till the end but lost the game through a late goal. This was the only closely-fought defeat for the Old Trafford outfit against the big boys in the league this season.

Liverpool (0-7) – March 2023

This was a day to forget for all associated with Manchester United football club. United picked the worst occasion to have an off day and their old foes Liverpool were happy to punish them by scoring a staggering seven goals. Jurgen Klopp’s side scored six of the seven goals in second half alone, as ten Hag’s side crumbled like a pack of cards. That shocking defeat will go down in Man United’s history as one of their worst ever results of all time.

Newcastle United (0-2) – April 2023

The latest setback came at St James’ Park this weekend. Manchester United were comprehensively beaten 2-0 by Newcastle United. Even though the home side had to wait till second half to get their goals, nothing can be taken away from their utter dominance. Red Devils were never really in the game and were a shadow of their usual self. Erik ten Hag’s side had to consider themselves extremely lucky to not lose the game by a bigger margin.
