Champions League stats: Top 10 second-leg comebacks that shocked the world

It is not a secret that the UEFA Champions League is one of the most glorified tournaments in world football and the most important piece of silverware in European club football. Teams and players are always been judged by the kind of performance they have been putting up on a Champions League night over the years. Real Madrid is considered the best club in the world, thanks to their 14 Champions League titles with their history over the years has been written in history books with letters of gold.

This competition has a lot of importance in the history of the European heavyweights and the players who have single-handedly settled a tie in order to take their team to the trophy are regarded as the club heroes. A club’s success in a season is hugely defined by this competition and how they performed through the rounds.

Here’s a list of comebacks that will forever be remembered in the history of the UEFA Champions League:

The most recent comeback that Liverpool pulled off in the 2018/19 Champions League season, still gives the Anfield fans mere goosebumps. The king of the Champions League, Cristiano Ronaldo has done this kind of magic from time to time in his career bringing Real Madrid back from a defeat at Wolfsburg and also delivering his command in that famous hattrick he scored against Atletico Madrid in Italy.

Way back in the 2016/17 season, in the round of 16 stage, Barcelona faced Paris Saint Germain in what was an absolute thriller of an encounter and rather became the first team to come back from a four-goal deficit and win the tie. Such was the occasion and intensity of this comeback that it was even named with a special name: La Remontada which means The Comeback in Spanish.

After that in the 2018/19 season, it was a special night in Paris with PSG being on the receiving end yet again as they saw themselves lose a tie that they had in the grasp of their hands. PSG had a lead of 2-0 from their visit to Manchester in the first leg but little did they know that Marcus Rashford and his team would repeat a sensational comeback right on their home ground.

In that very season, Liverpool fans saw magic happen in front of their eyes as Anfield roared out in full voice to comeback against Barcelona. The Catalan club had won the tie at home thanks to Messi’s magical two goals but Gini Wijnaldum put all that efforts to vain as he guided his side to a memorable 4-0 victory which later ignited his side to even lift the trophy later that year.
