Ju Wenjun is a Chinese chess grandmaster. In 2017, she became the fifth woman to achieve a rating of 2600. Ju has won titles in May 2018, November 2018, and 2020, making her a three-time Women’s World Chess Champion. She is a four-time Women’s World Chess Champion, having won the title first in May 2018. Wenjun then defended her title in November 2018 against Kateryna Lagno, 2020 against Aleksandra Goryachkina, and 2023 against her fellow compatriot Lei Tingjie.

Ju defended her world title in 2023. She was the winner of both the Women’s Chinese Chess Championship in 2010 and 2014, and in July 2011, she bagged the first Hangzhou Women Grandmaster Chess Tournament undefeated with scores of 6 1/2/9. Ju received the GM title from FIDE in November 2014 at the 4th Quarter Presidential Board Meeting in Sochi, Russia. She is now China’s grandmaster and the 31st woman to hold the title. She has six GM norms, including three norms from the Women’s Grand Prix.

In December 2017, Ju won the Women’s World Chess Championship in Riyadh and won the same championship held in St. Petersburg in December 2018. Ju won the FIDE Women’s Grand Prix 2015-16, which qualified her for a match in her women’s world championship against incumbent champion Tan Zhongyi. She won the match in 2018, and in the next championship decided by a 64-player knockout tournament, she won the tournament, which was held in November 2018, and retained the chess champion title.

Early Career of Ju Wenjun

Ju started learning to play chess at the age of seven. In December 2004, Ju Wenjun placed third in the Asian Women’s Chess Championship in Beirut. This result qualified her to play in her first Women’s World Chess Championship in 2006. She competed in this event also in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2017. Ju has played for the Chinese women’s national team since 2008. Over the years, Wenjun has won the 42nd Chess Olympiad in 2016, the Women’s World Team Championship in 2011 and 2009, and the Ladies Asian Nation Chess Cup in 2012, 2014, and 2016.

Apart from that, she has also won the gold medal at the Olympiad in 2018 and the gold medal in the Asian Games. Simultaneously, in the domestic level she plays for the Shanghai chess club in the China Chess League (CCL).
