The Olympics is probably the biggest stage in the field of athletics and other sports like badminton, swimming and table tennis to name a few. The stature of the Olympics draws parallel with tournaments like the FIFA World Cup and the ICC Cricket World Cup. In this mega-event, India was never a powerhouse to begin with. However, that all changed in the Tokyo Olympics as the world was introduced to the name Neeraj Chopra. After that, India has tried to bolster its Olympic preparations as far as possible.
The Mission Olympic has been set up under the Target Olympics Podium Scheme which assists the athletes. The Mission Olympic Cell is a body set up by the Sports Authority of India (SAI). It identifies athletes for the Target Olympics Podium Scheme (TOPS). The TOPS is a flagship programme set up to provide assistance to India’s Olympic medal hopefuls. The ministry has doubled the number of former athletes in the revamped MOC to make it more athlete-centric. The sports ministry wants to build on the momentum gained from the Tokyo Games.
The preparatory camp in Switzerland
The Mission Olympic Cell has given the go-ahead for the preparatory camp to Neeraj Chopra. The World Athletic Champion will be included in an upcoming 12-day training camp in Switzerland. This essential training is scheduled ahead of his performance at the Diamond League 2023 final. The Diamond League Final is scheduled to take place in Eugene, USA this September. As a result, a sum of Rs 5.89 lakhs has been authorized for the beneficial camp. This camp is slated between September 1 and September 12. This grand investment comes at the back of the 2nd place finish of Neeraj at the Diamond League event in Zurich. Added to that, Neeraj also impressed his viewers globally with a throw of 85.71 m.
In addition, steeplechase runner Parul Chaudhary has also been included in the core group of TOPS. Parul recently secured a position at the Paris Olympics by recording a National Record time of 9:15.31s. As a result, the TOPS group became very much interested in her. Her performance sparked admiration and acclaim worldwide.
Other notable boosts to the Olympic squad of India
Furthermore, the Mission Olympic Cell approved financial aid for renowned Table tennis player Sharath Kamal. This includes participating in various events, sourcing indispensable equipment, and hiring expert services.
