Golf stats: Golfers from Great Britain who have conquered the Open Championship
The Open or the British Open is the oldest golf tournament in the world. Founded in 1860, it was originally held annually at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. Later the venue rotated between a select group of coastal links golf courses in the United Kingdom. It is organised by the R&A.
The Open is one of the four men’s major golf tournaments, the others being the Masters Tournament, the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open. Since the PGA Championship moved to May 2019, the Open has been chronologically the fourth and final major tournament of the year. It is held in mid-July.
It is called The Open because it is in theory “open” to all, i.e. professional and amateur golfers. In practice, the current event is a professional tournament in which a small number of the world’s leading amateurs also play, by invitation or qualification. The success of the tournament has led to many other open golf tournaments being introduced around the world. The reigning champion is Cameron Smith, who won the 2022 Open at St Andrews with a score of 268.
What is the format of the Open Championship?
Qualifying for the British Open was introduced in 1907. However, in the modern era, the majority of players get an exemption from qualification. This is based on the performance of the previous season. It can also be based on the high rankings of the Official World Golf Rankings. Five amateurs are also exempt from qualifying by winning various global amateur titles provided they maintain their amateur status prior to The Open.
Talking about the game format, there are a total of 156 players. The British Open is a 72-hole stroke play. According to the weather conditions, the players have to 18 holes a day over four days. The tournament starts on the day before the third Friday in July. Each player has one morning and one afternoon tee time in the first two days in groups of three. After 36 holes, only the top 70 and ties play the final 36 holes. If there is a tie for the lead after 72 holes, a three-hole aggregate playoff is held. This is followed by a sudden death if the lead is still tied.
