Badminton Stats: Indonesian players who have won the Korea Open

The Korea Open is an annual badminton event that is commonly held in South Korea. The tournament used to be known as Korea Open Super Series. However, it became one of the BWF Super Series tournaments in 2007. In 2018, BWF categorised the tournament as Super 500. This was done under the restructuring of the BWF calendar in 2018.  The tournament has a total prize pool of $ 420,000. The Korea Open is the fifth Super 500 tournament of the BWF World Tour.

Who are some of the famous Indonesian players to win the tournament?

1. Anthony Sinisuka Ginting (Event- Men’s singles, Year- 2017)

Anthony Sinisuka Ginting became the Korea Open champion in 2017 by defeating Son Wan-Ho of South Korea. The final scoreline stood at 21-16, 18-21 & 13-21. The match went down the wire but Ginting managed to emerge victorious. However, this is his only podium in the tournament. Nevertheless, due to his impeccable professional badminton career, he features in this list. Anthony had been an Olympic bronze medalist and the current World No. 2. Apart from the Korea Open, Gintining has also won the coveted Thomas Cup. He also has gold medals in Asian Championships and SEA Games.

2. Liliyana Natsir & Nova Widianto (Event- Mixed doubles, Year-2006)

Liliyana Natsir & Nova Widianto became the Korea Open champion in 2006 by defeating Jens Eriksen & Mette Schjoldager of Denmark in the Mixed doubles finals. The final scoreline stood at 23-21 and 21-18. This was the only podium in the tournament throughout her career. However, due to her impeccable mixed doubles record, she features in this list. Liliyana has also been a former world no. 1 on two occasions. She first reached the pinnacle in 2010 with Nova Widianto. Then again with Tontowi Ahmed, she became world no. 1 in 2018. Ahmed & Natsir have also won the gold medal in the Rio Olympics. Over the years Liliyana is considered to be one of the greatest mixed doubles players from Indonesia.

3. Fajar Alfian & Muhammad Rian Ardianto (Event- Men’s doubles, Year-2019)

Fajar Alfian & Muhammad Rian Ardianto became the Korea Open champion in 2019 by defeating Takeshi Kamura & Keigo Sonoda of Japan. The final scoreline stood at 21-16 & 21-17. The match was a cakewalk for the Indonesian pair. However, this is the only podium for the pair in the tournament. Nevertheless, due to the immaculate record streak of the pair, they feature on this list. Alfian & Ardianto had been a Thomas Cup gold medalist and the current World No. 1. Apart from the Korea Open, the duo has also won the coveted All-England Open. They also have gold medals in Asian Championships and SEA Games. The duo has come to be regarded as the modern prodigies of the men’s doubles.
