EPL stats: Which are the clubs with most Premier League draws in a season?

The level of Premier League is such that it is extremely difficult for clubs to frequently gain the maximum points. The fast-paced physical gameplay does not suit everyone, as it drains a lot out of the players after most matches. It is not only difficult to break down a strong defensive unit but it is equally tricky to hold their own ground from the opposition threat. With a lot of money being invested in the league over the years, the entire division is filled with quality players in their ranks capable of giving a difficult game to any side on a given day.

Therefore, this makes it highly challenging to consistently win football matches in the English top flight. There are no easy games in the Premier League. Even to win by a big margin, a team must play at the top level for the entire 90 minutes. Rarely are there matches when teams walk into a game and secure the three points with relative ease. Clubs have to dig deep and give their all to get the maximum points against any side in the division. As a result, this could lead to plenty of draws. Teams with defence-first approach often play out several draws.

Which is the club with most Premier League draws in a season?

The clubs that have registered the most draws in a single Premier League season are Manchester City, Sheffield United and Southampton. All three clubs have played out a staggering 18 draws during a single league campaign. However, back then they played 42 games with the division comprising of 22 clubs. Manchester City and Sheffield United managed it in the 1993-94 season. Meanwhile, Southampton did it in the very next year in 1994-95 campaign.

It is a bit surprising to see Manchester City at the top of this chart. Considering the amount of domination, they have made under their current manager Pep Guardiola, it is hard to believe that Man City were not at the same level back then. At that stage, getting into Europe itself was a distant dream for the blue half of Manchester. However, Manchester City have changed drastically since then and have come a long way to be considered as one of the dangerous sides in all of Europe right now.

Which other clubs have made this list?

After the teams in the Premier League was reduced to 20, there are three sides that have registered 17 draws in a single season. Newcastle United managed it in the 2003-04 campaign, while Sunderland did it in the 2014-15 season. Aston Villa are the only side to have registered these many draws twice in the Premier League era -2006-07 and 2011-12.
