Champions League stats: Which clubs have scored the most goals from outside the penalty box in 2022-23 UCL season?

There is nothing more difficult for a team than to score goals in top level of football. Teams come up with various strategies and patterns of play to break through opposition defence. Some work, while others do not. However, picking apart a defence only solves one problem, as the other main problem is somehow to stick the ball in the back of the net. This is where a lot of teams falter, as they are denied by brilliant goalkeeping or poor decision making in the final third.

Some teams manage to do it more consistently than others. However, even these sides have those days when the balls will simply not go into the net – no matter how hard they try. Hence, to force a goal, a lot of players try shooting from distance. These long range shots from outside the penalty box are very difficult to score. Those shots have to be precise and must be in the bottom or top corner to have a chance of rippling the net. Let us look at the clubs that have scored the maximum number of goals from outside the area in the current Champions League season.

Which clubs have scored the most goals from outside the area?

There are a few clubs tied at the top of this table in the ongoing Champions League season. Finalists Manchester City, last year winners Real Madrid and French giants Paris Saint-Germain have each scored four goals from outside the penalty box in the Europe’s elite competition this campaign. PSG were not in the tournament for long, since they were eliminated in the first knockout round. Hence, to see them score four of their total goals from outside the penalty box is not a bad return.

The other two teams though have reached the semi-final of the competition. They both were involved in a high-octane last-four battle. After an evenly-fought first leg that ended 1-1 in Spain, Manchester City destroyed Real Madrid in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium 4-0 to march their way in to the final. With Man City being the overwhelming favourites to lift the trophy in a couple of weeks’ time against Inter Milan, they could very well leapfrog other teams in this list to reclaim the top spot.

Which are the other notable clubs in this table?

Benfica are next in the list with three goals from outside the penalty area. Meanwhile, Germain giants Bayern Munich have found the back of the net twice from a similar region this season. English sides Chelsea and Liverpool have also scored two goals each from outside the penalty box in the 2022-23 campaign.
