His undefeated run of 67 games, a remarkable feat, came to an end in April 2017. Later, So triumphed in the Fischer Random Chess format against Magnus Carlsen with an impressive score of 13 1⁄2–2½. He then went on to win the U.S. Championship in 2020 and 2021, and secured an emphatic win in the Opera Euro Rapid in 2021. His latest significant victory was in the Chess.com Global Championship in 2022, where he won the title, defeating Hikaru Nakamura in the semi-finals and Nihal Sarin in the finals with a match score of 4.5-1.5.
