La Liga stats: Players with the most total passes in 2022-23 La Liga season

Midfielders are often overlooked by pundits when praising a team’s success over the season. It is the strikers and goal scorers who grab the limelight in modern football. The work rate of the players in the middle of the park are not spoken in the same manner as those players starting in front of them. Thankfully though football coaches are not of the same opinion. They often place the emphasis on the midfielders to run the show, which allows them to see a lot of the ball.

A midfielder is crucial in both aspects of the game – attack and defence. Their ability to stitch passes together and create opportunities up front for the attackers are crucial in scoring goals. The same goes in the opposite end of the pitch, as it is the job of the midfielders to track back and help out the defenders when the opposition attacks. Games are more often than not won and lost in the middle of the park, which is why managers place a lot of emphasis on those positions.

Who is the player with most total passes in 2022-23 La Liga season?

It is surprising to think that the player with the maximum number of total passes in the current La Liga season is not from the two heavyweights of Spain. Instead, it is the experienced Villarreal midfielder Daniel Parejo who tops the list after managing a total of 1868 passes in the league season till now. It is an astonishing number of attempted passes for a footballer. Even more so impressive is that fact he does not belong to the two Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona. However, his completed passes in the league this season stands at 1690, which is still an impressive tally.

Second in the list is Real Madrid’s passing machine Toni Kroos. The German playmaker is one of the best in his position. Be it short, medium or long passes, Kroos hardly gets a pass wrong. He is unbelievably precise with both in the ground and air. A lot of Real Madrid’s success over the last decade, especially in the Champions League, must be credited to the experienced player for the ease at which he controlled the midfield. He has made a total of 1653 passes and completed an astonishing 1568 of them.

Third in the list is another Villarreal player. However, it is surprising to know that he is a defender and not a midfielder. Spanish centre-back Pau Torres has made an incredible 1612 passes so far in this La Liga season. He has completed 1377 of those passes. In modern football, defenders are involved a lot in the build-up phase. For a side like Villarreal, who like to play from the back, it is not a surprise to see their defenders seeing a lot of the ball.

Barcelona only has one representative in this list

Torres is also known for his ability to pass the ball from the back and plays a crucial role in the build up for both his club and country. Hence it is not a complete shock to see him placed third in the list. Meanwhile, there is only place for one Barcelona player in this list. It is the Dutch playmaker Frenkie de Jong, who is placed 10th in the table. He has made a total of 1448 passes and 1313 of them are completed passes.
