Who is Kateryna Lagno’s parents? Know everything about her mother and father

Kateryna Lagno, renowned as a Russian chess grandmaster, was a child chess sensation who obtained the title of Woman Grandmaster (WGM) when she was just 12 years and 4 months old. She ascended to the prestigious rank of grandmaster in 2007. Her impressive resume includes two European Women’s Championship titles and a prominent presence in team events; she contributed to Ukraine’s gold at the Women’s Chess Olympiad in 2006 and 2014 and to Russia’s in 2013 and from 2017 to 2021 at the Women’s World Team Championship.

Moreover, Lagno’s consistency and skill have led her teams to triumph in the Women’s European Team Championship successive five times between 2013 and 2021, where she represented Ukraine in 2013 and afterward, Russia. Individually, her prowess was reflected as she became the Women’s Vice World Champion in 2018, the Women’s World Rapid Champion in 2014, and the Women’s World Blitz Champion in 2010, 2018, and 2019. Lagno’s excellence was evident early on; she clinched the Girls Under 10 title at the World Youth Chess Championships in 1999 and the Girls Under 14 at the European Youth Chess Championships in 2002.

Born on the cusp of the 1990s in Lviv, located in present-day western Ukraine, she initially rose through the ranks playing for Ukraine before relocating to Russia in 2014. During her tenure with Ukraine, her surname was transcribed as Lahno. Her meteoric rise in youth chess also saw her eclipse Judit Polgar’s record by becoming the youngest-ever WGM in 2002. She continued to shine in 2003, securing the European championship for girls under 14, and not long after, she began representing Ukraine in international competitions, including the Chess Olympiad, and contesting in the women’s world championship.

Achievements

In May 2008, Kateryna Lagno clinched the title at the European Individual Women’s Chess Championship, held in Plovdiv, with a narrow margin of half a point across 11 rounds. The following year, she represented Spartak, a club that secured victories at both the Russian team championship and the European Club Cup in Ohrid. August 2010 marked Lagno’s triumph as the Women’s World Blitz Chess Champion. In 2011, Lagno showcased her skills at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee, achieving third place in the Grandmaster Group C.

Her prowess continued as she earned the individual bronze medal from the first board at the 40th Chess Olympiad in Istanbul in 2012. By the end of 2012, Lagno shared the top spot with other grandmasters – Hou Yifan, Humpy Koneru, and Anna Muzychuk – at the women’s rapid event of the SportAccord World Mind Games in Beijing, ultimately winning the gold medal after a tie-break. April 2014 saw Lagno emerge as the victor of the Women’s World Rapid Championship in Khanty-Mansiysk, surpassing Alexandra Kosteniuk through tiebreakers.

FIDE ratified her transfer from the Ukrainian Chess Federation to the Russian Chess Federation in July 2014, after her application lodged in March. In a stunning display of skill, Lagno was narrowly defeated by the reigning world champion, Ju Wenjun, in the finals of the Women’s World Championship in November 2018. A month later, she redeemed her prowess by clinching the Women’s World Blitz Chess Championship in St. Petersburg with an impressive undefeated run.

Debut

In her inaugural appearance at the Women’s World Chess Championship in 2004, Kateryna Lagno surpassed WIM Luciana Morales Mendoza in round one and bested IM Ekaterina Polovnikova following a second-round tiebreaker. However, her journey concluded in the third round at the hands of IM Ekaterina Kovalevskaya. Despite her setback at the World Championship, Lagno triumphed at the 2005 European Individual Championship, boasting an impeccable 6/6 scoreline before decisively winning against GM Nadezhda Kosintseva, who was an IM at the time, in the playoff.
