The Irish shuttler started his humble badminton career with his father at the neighbourhood club. Subsequently, at the 2016 European U17 Championships, he won the gold medal in the boys’ singles competition and the bronze in the doubles competition with Paul Reynolds. He won the Irish National Championships in the men’s singles division that same year. Nguyen’s first senior international championship was won in the men’s doubles competition with Reynolds at the Polish International, and he then won the men’s singles championship at the Welsh International.
In the 2018 Junior European Championship, he achieved a Bronze medal in the boy’s singles section. In the year 2017, he won gold in Men’s singles at the Welsh International Tournament and Men’s doubles at Polish International. In the same year in 2017, he also won a silver in the Irish Open. However, the twilight of Nguyen’s career has to be the Tokyo Olympics. Although the Irish shuttler did not finish at the podium, he put Irish badminton on the world stage. Subsequently, the Irish shuttler has shown tremendous promise at the ongoing Hylo Open. Naturally, Ireland will be hoping that Nguyen continues this form in the Paris Olympics as well.
Domestic Career
Nhat, sponsored by an International Olympic Committee scholarship for Team Ireland, started playing badminton after emigrating to Ireland from Vietnam at the age of six. By 15, he had claimed the European Under-17 championship and also secured his first adult championship in Ireland. In 2018, he earned a bronze at the European Junior competition and reached the quarterfinals in both the World Junior Championships and the Youth Olympic Games. During his initial senior year in 2019, Nhat advanced to the quarterfinals in four international events and was among the top 16 at the European Games. He triumphed in seven out of eight matches during the 2019 World Team Challenge, where Ireland nearly emerged victorious in Division 3. In 2021, he made it to the top 16 at both the English Open and European Championships.
International Career
Nhat Nguyen has made a name for himself as a major young star in Europe, and at the Welsh International, he showed why he’s the one to keep an eye on. He clinched the men’s singles title impressively. On the event’s final day, which was Saturday, European players dominated, winning three of the matchups and stepping onto the victory podium four times. Irish player Nguyen, just 17 years old and ranked 7th at the start, proved his rank didn’t quite match his skill. He overcame India’s Karan Rajan Rajarajan, the 3rd seed, in the quarterfinals. Then in the nail-biting final, he outplayed the experienced R M V Gurusaidutt from India, who had past success at the India Open and a silver from the Commonwealth Games, with scores of 21-16, 23-21.
Nguyen staged an impressive comeback to defeat France’s Alex Lanier and clinch the title at the AIG FZ Forza Irish Open. He triumphed in the men’s singles at the National Indoor Arena, part of the Sport Ireland Campus. After securing the first game at 21-13, Nguyen appeared to be at a disadvantage when Lanier surged ahead with an 18-13 lead in game two. But Nguyen snagged a crucial point after an exciting exchange, sparking an amazing fightback. He wrapped up the match with a 21-19 win in the second game and celebrated by joyfully tossing his T-shirt to the fans.
