Chelsea vs Newcastle United: Can Mykhailo Mudryk become a regular starter following his wonder goal?

Chelsea overcame Newcastle United in a thriller to win the Premier League contest 3-2 at Stamford Bridge. The action-packed game had everything from start to finish and had the supporters on the edge of their seats. It all began with the Blues taking the lead through Nicolas Jackson at the start of the match before Alexander Isak equalised for the visitors just before half-time. Cole Palmer put the hosts back in front at the start of the second period before Mykhailo Mudryk scored the third with a special goal.

Jacob Murphy reduced the deficit for Newcastle United in the dying minutes of the Premier League match but it was too little and too late for them. It was a much-needed three points for Chelsea, while Newcastle’s struggles continued. Both teams came into this fixture on the back of a below-par campaign. They both were struggling to find consistency despite having a squad filled with quality all over the pitch. Hence, it was difficult to identify a winner before the game started.

There were plenty of good moments from the match but the one that stood out was the third goal scored by substitute Mudryk, which proved to be the winner in the end. After the match, manager Mauricio Pochettino was asked whether that strike might act as a catalyst for the attacker to be get a run in the starting line-up. Pochettino, quoted on the club’s website, replied, “I think it was a very good goal. That is what we expect of a player who came from the bench – have an impact. He now has to compete with different players in the position he can play. It [whether he can become a starter] is more a question for him than for me.”

The Chelsea manager then diverted the attention to the remaining attackers and heaped praise on the contribution of Palmer and Jackson. Palmer had moved to Stamford Bridge only last summer from Manchester City and has taken no time to settle into his new environment. “He is doing well. He arrived on the last day of the transfer window but it was easy for him to adapt to the team and the demands of the coaching staff. I think he is showing his quality and how he can link the game. He is fantastic, he is getting more mature every day. He still needs to improve but is doing a very good job,” he stated.

Mauricio Pochettino on Nicolas Jackson

Reflecting on Jackson’s performance, Pochettino said, “Of course, he [Jackson] is improving. We need to understand the players when they are young and arrive from outside of England. They need time to learn the Premier League. They also need their teammates to perform, but he is doing really well. The effort is there, you see that with how he presses, and he has the quality. With more games and more experience, he is going to be more calm and more clinical in front of the goal. He has the capacity to be an offensive player that can score a lot of goals for Chelsea, we need to keep believing.”

It is not easy to get past a well-drilled Newcastle side, hence, Chelsea can take plenty of positives from the result. However, Pochettino feels there is still room for improvement, as he was not happy with the goals they conceded in this match. “Some offensive players are starting to score more. And that is important. They are feeling the confidence and feeling the net. But we still need to improve. We concede two goals that we should not concede in this way. We were so disappointed because we made two mistakes that should not happen at this level. But it is a moment to learn and improve from,” he stated.
