BCCI Announcement: Rishabh Pant Cleared for IPL 2024; Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Shami Ruled Out

Rishabh Pant, after a long and arduous gap, has finally obtained the green light from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to compete in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. It completes a protracted 14-month rehabilitation process after the explosive wicketkeeper-batting suffered a car crash in December 2022. Pant suffered several injuries in a car accident on December 30th, 2022, near Roorkee, Uttarakhand. He had a fractured wrist and ankle as well as a major right knee injury, that required ligament reconstruction surgery. Despite the severity of his injuries, Pant has shown nothing but remarkable resilience on his recovery trail. This journey back to the cricket field began with Pant’s commitment to rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru (NCA).

After hours of toiling alone at the nets, monotonous physical therapy sessions and grinding fitness routines saw him gradually regain strength and mobility on his lower body, and before long he was focusing on accelerating towards a return to of India cricket. Less than six weeks later, that commitment has brought Pant back to competitive cricket as he gears up to join the Delhi Capitals for their upcoming IPL season.

Pant’s return to action is not only a personal triumph but big boost for the Indian cricket team with the T20 World Cup scheduled in June. BCCI secretary Jay Shah in an interview expressed, “He is batting well, he is keeping well. We will declare him fit very soon. If he can play the T20 World Cup for us, that will be a big thing for us. He is a big asset for us. If he can keep, he can play the World Cup. Let’s see how he does in the IPL.” While Pant’s comeback story serves as a source of inspiration, the news is not as promising for two of India’s pace bowling stalwarts, Mohammed Shami and Prasidh Krishna. Both bowlers have been sidelined from the IPL 2024 season due to ongoing injury rehabilitation.
