Pakistan women’s team to make international beach volleyball debut in Central Asian Championship

Whenever one hears of Pakistan and sports what comes to mind? It is always hockey or cricket. However, the women’s team of Pakistan have generated interest in a completely new game, volleyball. Pakistan women’s volleyball team is set to make its international beach volleyball debut next week. It will partake in the Central Asian Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship in Bangladesh. This maiden appearance will also bolster the scenario of volleyball in Pakistan. Now, with the Paris Olympics around the corner, this will be a great step in the country’s progress in this sport.

What is the Central Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship?

The Central Asian Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship is an international volleyball competition in Central and South Asia. It is contested by the women’s national teams of the members of the Central Asian Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZVA). The CAZVA is the regional governing body of the sport. The tournament was launched under the auspices of the 2019 Volleyball Asian Championship. The main objective of the association is to promote the sport of volleyball in South Asia. It will also generate awareness about the sport of beach volleyball in the subcontinent and primarily amongst women.

Nepal is the current champion of this particular tournament. In 2019, five nations made their debut in the tournament: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives and Nepal.

The Pakistani beach volleyball team

An official of the Pakistan Volleyball Federation (PVF) confirmed to Geo News of the team’s participation in the forthcoming tournament. Pakistan women’s volleyball team flies to participate in the CAVA women’s beach volleyball championship on Sunday. Chaudhary Yaqoob, PVF chairman, said recently, “Yes, we are sending a team which will consist of two players, Azra Farooq and Muqddas Bukhari. They will fly to Bangladesh tomorrow via Doha.” Additionally, Mohammad Zaid will be travelling with the team as the head coach.

The event will take place from 13 to 15 September in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Added to, the teams of Bangladesh and Pakistan, teams from India, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan will participate in the event. Therefore, it is safe to say that the tournament will be a very rough terrain for the debutants. The PVF chairman added that the team participated in a preparatory camp ahead of the event in Islamabad along with other members of the Pakistan women’s volleyball team. He hoped for a better show by the Pakistani squad in the championship.
