Finals appearance in the debut season

The Heat advanced to the NBA Finals by defeating the Boston Celtics in six games in the Eastern Conference Finals, giving Butler his first Finals berth. Butler finished with 40 points, 11 rebounds, and 13 assists in Game 3 of the 2020 NBA Finals, becoming the third player in Finals history to score a 40+ point triple-double, after LeBron James (then with Cleveland) in 2015 and Jerry West with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1969.

Butler also became the first player in Finals history to have more points, rebounds, and assists than James, who ended with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists. Butler recorded 35 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists, and 5 steals in Game 5 to become the first player in Finals history to have 35 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, and 5 steals.

He is also the second player in NBA playoff history to achieve those numbers, following Gary Payton in 2000. Butler joined James in 2015 as the only player to have multiple 30-point triple-doubles in the same Finals series. Along with James, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain, and Draymond Green, he became the sixth player in Finals history to record two triple-doubles. The Miami Heat were defeated in six games by the Los Angeles Lakers. Butler, who joined James in 2016, became only the second player in a Finals series to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks.
