Kateryna Lagno, who previously represented Ukraine, is a women’s chess grandmaster who now competes for Russia. She earned her Woman Grandmaster title at just 12 years old, and in 2007, she achieved the grandmaster status. Lagno went on to win the European Women’s Chess Championship twice and secure team gold medals in the Women’s Chess Olympiad for both Ukraine in 2006 and Russia in 2014. She has also been a vital player in winning the Women’s World Team Championship, first with Ukraine in 2013, and later with Russia in 2017 and 2021.

Lagno has individually excelled as the Women’s Vice World Champion in 2018, the Women’s World Rapid Champion in 2014, and a three-time Women’s World Blitz Champion in 2010, 2018, and 2019. She started her career in chess as a youth, winning the Girls Under 10 section at the World Youth Chess Championships in 1999 and the Girls Under 14 at the European Youth Chess Championships in 2001. In 2004, Kateryna Lagno participated in the Women’s World Chess Championship. At just 15, she triumphed in the European Individual Women’s Championship in 2005.

The following year, she claimed victory in the prestigious North Urals Cup, earning a grandmaster norm. In 2008, Lagno won the European Individual Women’s Chess Championships again. Her club achievements include playing for “Spartak,” which won the Russian team championship and the European Club Cup in 2009. She became the Women’s World Blitz Champion in 2010 and finished third in the Grandmaster Group C of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in 2011. Her performance at the 40th Chess Olympiad in Istanbul in 2012 earned her the individual bronze medal.

In April 2014, Lagno won the Women’s World Rapid Championship. In July 2014, her switch from the Ukrainian Chess Federation to the Russian Chess Federation was officially approved by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). She claimed the gold medal in the women’s blitz chess event of the IMSA Elite Mind Games 2016. In November 2018, Lagno narrowly missed the Women’s World Championship title. However, she bounced back in December 2018 by clinching the Women’s World Blitz Chess Championship without losing a single game.

In her debut at the Women’s World Chess Championship in 2004, Kateryna Lagno advanced through the initial rounds but was ultimately outplayed by Ekaterina Kovalevskaya in the third round. Despite this setback, Lagno triumphed in the 2005 European Individual Championship, garnering a perfect score before winning a playoff against Nadezhda Kosintseva. She repeated her success in 2008, clinching the title with an impressive 8.5/11, edging out the competition by a narrow margin. Noteworthy was her win over Viktorija Cmilyte, a formidable rival among the group of contenders just half a point behind her.

Lagno, a chess prodigy, swiftly clinched victory at the 1999 Under-10 Girls World Championship, and by 2002, she earned the Woman Grandmaster title, surpassing Judit Polgar as the youngest to attain this distinction. In 2003, Lagnos secured the title at the European Under-14 Girls’ Championship. By the following year, she represented Ukraine at the Chess Olympiad and vied for the Women’s World Championship.
