Volleyball Stats: A guide to everything about the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League

The FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League is a global sporting event, featuring elite women’s national volleyball teams from across the world. All participating teams are recognized members of the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), the leading global body that governs the sport. This tournament was first held in the span of May to July 2018, with the final matches hosted in Nanjing, China. The United States emerged as the winners of the inaugural edition, after a decisive victory over Turkey in the ultimate match.

In July 2018, the FIVB shared the news that China was chosen to host the next three iterations of the Women’s Volleyball Nations League Finals, which were scheduled for 2019 through 2021. However, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic led to the FIVB’s decision on March 13, 2020 to postpone the Nations League until the conclusion of the 2020 Summer Olympics. In the end, the 2020 tournament was called off, and Italy was designated as the host nation for the final segment of the 2021 VNL.

The foundation of this tournament was publicly disclosed in October 2017 as a collaboration among the FIVB, IMG, and 21 national federations, announced concurrently with the Challenger Cup as a result the introduction of the Nations League signified the replacement of the World Grand Prix, a well-established annual women’s international volleyball event that was held annually from 1993 to 2017.


The International Volleyball Federation entered into a partnership with the globally recognized strategy and design firm, Landor Associates, with the purpose of establishing the branding for the Volleyball Nations League. Landor Associates has extended its services to a variety of areas, ranging from developing in-stadium and television graphics to designing staff uniforms. Microsoft has also become an important player in this arena through an agreement with the FIVB. This deal is expected to amplify the fan experience on match days and extend this excitement into the digital world.

What is the Prize Money of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League?

In line with the FIVB’s policy promoting gender equality, both men’s and women’s teams participating in the VNL receive equivalent prize money. In the preliminary phase of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League, teams that secure a victory are awarded a sum of $9,000 (US Dollars) for each win, while the teams that do not win $4,000 (US Dollars), regardless of the game’s outcome.

Regarding the overall prizes for the tournament, the team that clinches the championship title receives a huge reward of $1,000,000 (US Dollars), while the team that finishes in the second position receives half that amount, totaling $500,000 (US Dollars). The third place team receives a generous reward of $300,000. However, the players who are selected into the ‘Dream Team’ are each given $10,000, owing to their outstanding performance. The title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) carries an even more hefty amount of US$30,000.
