In a heartfelt and emotional tribute, wrestling icon Jake “The Snake” Roberts recently took to “The Snake Pit” to reminisce about the remarkable life and legacy of his dear friend, the late WWE Hall of Famer Terry Funk. Roberts’s touching words shed light on why Funk, a true pioneer of the wrestling world, remains unparalleled and a “1 of 1” among all the performers who followed him.
Roberts, known for his eloquence and deep love for the sport, spoke with great reverence about Funk, hailing him as “probably one of the greatest performers ever.” He went on to emphasize Funk’s unique qualities, saying, “Terry was just one of a kind, man. He always gave a 1000 percent, and always went above and beyond what was expected of him. He was a trailblazer. He did things nobody else even thought about doing. It was my pleasure to have spent some time with him … and just a hell of a guy.”
Jake “The Snake” Roberts speaks about his time with Terry Funk
One of the most poignant aspects of Roberts’s tribute was his revelation that he had the privilege of spending time with Funk both inside and outside the squared circle. This closeness allowed Roberts to gain invaluable insights from his elder peer, who was renowned for his innovative thinking in the wrestling business. Although Roberts didn’t delve into the specifics of their conversations, he hinted that Funk had foreseen many of the transformative changes that professional wrestling would undergo in the last three decades.
“I just feel so blessed to have been around him at times … some of the things he said to me were just so in tune with what was really going on,” Roberts recalled. “Sometimes, some of the things he said to me were just hard to conceive. [They] were just hard to bring up and make sense out of, but once you did, you’d be like, ‘Holy s–t, he’s right.'”
Both of them never faced each other
While Roberts never had the opportunity to face “The Funker” in a singles match during his career, he did participate in ECW’s “50 Years Of Funk” tribute show in September 1997. The event was initially intended to commemorate Funk’s retirement, but in true Funk fashion, he made a triumphant return to the ring just 11 days later, showcasing his enduring love and commitment to the sport.
Jake “The Snake” Roberts’s touching tribute to Terry Funk serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact that wrestlers like Funk have had on the world of professional wrestling. Funk’s legacy continues to live on through the memories and stories shared by his peers and fans, ensuring that his contributions to the sport will never be forgotten.
