WWE has used numerous variations of tag team titles throughout the years, including absorbing the WCW Tag Team Titles, introducing Women’s Tag Team Titles, and occasionally using two different sets of belts on Raw and SmackDown.
WWE has had a variety of tag championships over the years, some of which have had lengthy reigns. Some of the finest teams in history have broken numerous records while competing for gold. It is interesting to look back and see which reigns have been the longest, whether they were on Raw, SmackDown, or NXT.
The Valiant Brothers
The Valiant Brothers made an immediate impression after joining the organization in 1974. They didn’t waste any time in earning the World Tag Team Title belts and embarking on a year-long run as dominant heels. They eventually surrendered the belts to Dominic DeNucci and Victor Rivera, but not before enjoying a run with the gold that set a record at the time and was unsurpassed for a full fourteen years.
Demolition defeated Strike Force at WrestleMania 4 and went on to capture the World Tag Team Championship for a legendary reign during which they competed against a variety of teams, including the Hart Foundation, British Bulldogs, Powers Of Pain, The Twin Towers, and The Brainbusters. In the history of these particular titles, this would come to be the longest reign, which would end in 2010. The classic scene whereby the two tag team champions squared off as the first and second teams in the Royal Rumble match will probably stick in the minds of fans.
The New Day
Demolition’s reign at the top in the WWE came to an end in 2015 when The New Day won the WWE Tag Team Titles, which later changed to the Raw Tag Team Titles. Demolition had held the title for well over 20 years. The Prime Time Players, The Dudley Boyz, The Usos, Lucha Dragons, League of Nations, The Club, and other teams were defeated by New Day using the freebird rule during this reign before they were ultimately defeated by Sheamus & Cesaro, a freshly created tag team.
Gallus’ 497-day reign with the NXT UK Tag Team Titles was one of the show’s extremely long title reigns. NXT UK may be one of WWE’s lesser-known brands. The influence of the pandemic, which prevented the duo from defending their gold, was a major factor in why this reign lasted so long. They didn’t lose the titles to Pretty Deadly until February 2021, after gaining them in October 2019.
Despite having held the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships for the longest period of time—622 days—the Usos only recently lost them. They took back the SmackDown Tag Team Championship from Mysterio in 2021, and they later went on to capture the Raw Tag Team Titles as well. They wouldn’t actually give the titles to Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens until 2023.
