Paris Olympics 2024: Anush Agarwalla secures first-ever quota in the dressage event

Anush Agarwalla has earned India’s first spot for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics in the equestrian event known as dressage, according to the official announcement from the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) this past Monday.

In dressage, the horse and its rider have to go through a set routine while staying inside a fenced area. Agarwalla, who made history last year by winning India’s first solo medal in dressage at the Asian Games—a bronze—sealed his spot for Paris 2024 based on how well he did in four different FEI contests.

At those events, he was riding his horse Sir Caramello Old, and posted scores of 73.485 in Poland, 74.4 in the Netherlands, 72.9 in Germany, and 74.2 in Belgium. Just keep in mind, that it’s solely up to each country’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) to decide who they send to the Olympics, so it’s their call if Agarwalla will compete in Paris.

Other Equestrian’s to be part of Olympics

The Equestrian Federation of India (EFI) is planning to run trials to pick who gets to go to Paris in 2024. Agarwalla, who is 24 years old, has said he’s super proud and thankful for getting India into the Paris Olympics. He’s sure he’ll get the chance to wear the Indian colors there.

After bagging two medals at last year’s Asian Games, Anush is all in on the trials, focusing hard on cutting the big event. He says he’s going to keep on doing what he’s always done: stay sharp, work hard, set goals, and reach them. He’s gearing up for the trials and is hopeful that he’ll be chosen to represent India.

Agarwalla’s success has brought India’s total spots for the Paris 2024 Olympics up to 40. Previously, Fouaad Mirza was the one representing India in equestrian at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Going back further, riders like Imtiaaz Anees in Sydney 2000, Indrajit Lamba in Atlanta 1996, and a few others at the Moscow 1980 Olympics have all competed in this sport for India.
