European Youth Summer Olympic Festival: Who are the top performing Nations?

The European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) represents a major multi-sport celebration that takes place every two years which is intended for young athletes, aged 14 to 18, originating from the 50 nations that comprise the Association of European Olympic Committees. Making its debut in Brussels in 1991, the summer edition was quickly followed by the launch of a winter counterpart in Aosta just two years later.

Originally titled the European Youth Olympic Days, the festival saw a change in its name in 1999. The event organized by the European Olympic Committees and backed by the International Olympic Committee is rooted in Olympic tradition and was the first of its kind to be held exclusively for European athletes. The event is distinguished as a multi-sport event in the Olympic tradition exclusively for Europe’s young athletes and outdates its senior counterpart, the European Games by 24 years, and the Youth Olympic Games by 19 years.

The 2023 edition of the tournament

The 2023 iteration of the European Youth Summer Olympic Festival, known as EYOF 2023 or Maribor 2023, marked the 17th occurrence of the event. This gathering was staged from July 23 to July 29, 2023, in Maribor, Slovenia. The festival was scheduled to occur in Koper, Slovenia. However, in June 2021, Maribor was revealed as the replacement host after Koper decided to withdraw. The festival hosted a variety of events, including Artistic Gymnastics, Athletics, Basketball, Cycling, Handball, Judo, Skateboarding, Swimming, Tennis, and Volleyball.

At the end of the festival, it was Italy that topped the medal tally, bagging a total of 46 medals (16 gold, 18 silver, and 12 bronze). Germany (31) and France (24) were placed second and third respectively on the nations standings. Host nation Slovenia finished 17th as the country won 2 gold, 2 silver, and 5 bronze medals.
