Top five most successful Aston Martin/Racing Point/Force India drivers in Formula One

The 2023 Formula One season has seen an unprecedented rise of the Aston Martin F1 team. A team that at one point seemed on the verge of losing its place from the highest sporting competition in motorsport. After two races in 2023, Lawrence Stroll’s men earned two podiums and sit second in the constructor’s championship table ahead of Ferrari and Mercedes. There is still a long way to go this season but Aston Martin seems to have broken into that bulletproof top three of Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari, and are taking the fight to the top dogs. Currently, the two drivers with the team are Lance Stroll and two-time Formula One world championship winner and motorsport legend Fernando Alonso.

To tell the story of Aston Martin, one has to turn the clock back to when they were called Force India, owned by the Indian millionaire Vijay Mallya. After Mallya was found guilty of tax evasion, the team was put into administration before being bought by Lawrence Stroll in 2019. The team was rebranded ‘Racing Point’. A couple years later, Stroll renamed the team yet again, this time giving it the moniker of Aston Martin. Over this long period of time, there have been several drivers who have achieved quite a few with them. So without further ado, here are the five most successful Aston Martin drivers in Formula One history.

Sergio Perez

Currently at Red Bull, Sergio Perez was an absolute superstar at both Racing Point and Force India. The Mexican’s famous last to first victory for the pink outfit at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix is a story that will live on forever in the folklore of the team. The Mexican driver took part in a whopping 135 races for the team, winning one and earning seven podiums. With 577 points to his name with the team, he is undoubtedly their greatest ever driver so far.

Fernando Alonso

Although it has just been two races so far in his Aston Martin career, Fernando Alonso is already the second-highest podium finisher in the team’s history. The Spaniard, who is a two-time F1 world champion, has competed in the 2023 Bahrain GP and 2023 Saudi Arabian GP so far and has finished P3 in both. With his aggression and experience, Aston Martin can really hope to break into the top three in Formula One and be a force to be reckoned with for the years to come.

Lance Stroll

Lance Stroll, the son of team owner Lawrence Stroll, was brought in to the team to replace Esteban Ocon in 2019. From then until the 2023 Saudi Arabuan GP, Stroll has competed in 83 races for his father’s team and has picked up a couple of podiums so far. The 24-year-old has a long career ahead of him and might well become his team’s best ever driver.

Sebastian Vettel

Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel might have had a time to forget at Aston Martin, but it is important to note that it was him who gave the team their first podium after they were re-branded. Vettel has competed in 42 races with the green outfit and earned won podium which came at the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Aston Martin was the German’s last team in his illustrious Formula One career.

Giancarlo Fisichella

It is easy to forget that Aston Martin has one more podium winner in Giancarlo Fisichella. This came back in the day when they were called Force India. Fisichella’s podium was earned at the 2009 Belgian Grand Prix, which was one of the team’s first successful moments. The Italian finished P2 on the day and it remains his only podium in 30 races for the team.
