World Sporting Calendar 2024: Month of March

February was a standout month for world sports with many champions shining bright against the global competition. The Indian table tennis squads, both men and women, battled fiercely and carved out their place for the 2024 Paris Olympics, taking on some of the world’s best. Our sprinters, men, and women alike, broke national records, proving their prowess on the track with sheer velocity and skill.

As the month winds down, the anticipation builds. Badminton sensation Lakshya Sen, along with his fierce fellow players, sets his sights on making a splash on the journey to the Paris Olympic qualifications. These shining achievements and the promise of more to come are reasons plenty for world sports enthusiasts to swell with pride and eager expectation. Major events to watch in March in the World Sports Calendar are below listed:

World Athletics Indoor Championships 2024

The 19th World Athletics Indoor Championships is set to ignite the passion of athletes and spectators alike in 2024. Hosted in the vibrant Commonwealth Arena in Glasgow, UK, from March 13, this event marks a historic moment as Scotland welcomes the world’s finest indoor track and field stars for the first time. Among them, India’s own Praveen Chithravel, soaring in the triple jump, and Jeswin Aldrin, mastering the long jump, will showcase their talents.

This celebrated occasion, the third of its kind in the UK following Birmingham’s memorable staging in 2003 and 2018, is a precursor to the Paris Olympics. Athletes will be vying for glory, not just in Glasgow, but also setting their sights on the Olympic stage, as their performances here are a crucial step towards qualifying for the ultimate sporting showdown in 2024. The Commonwealth Arena, with its legacy of hosting the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 1990 and 2019, is once again the battleground for sporting dreams.

BWF German Open 2024

As dreams of Olympic glory in Paris 2024 grow stronger, the BWF German Open 2024 beckons athletes from February 27th to March 3rd. Set to unfold in the Westenergie Sporthalle, Mülheim, Germany, the tournament promises a thrilling battle for a share of the $210,000 prize, guided by BWF’s fair play rules. In its 69th year, this prestigious event, the fifth in the BWF World Tour of 2024, continues a legacy of passion and competition, proudly hosted by Germany’s own Badminton Association under the BWF’s banner.

Boxing

The 2024 World Boxing Qualification event kicks off on February 27 and runs until March 12. Deepak Bhoria is set to battle it out to claim a spot for the Paris games, facing off against Amit Panghal, who’s not on the team. The debut World Olympic Boxing Qualification in Busto Arsizio offers 50 spots for the Olympics – 28 for men and 22 for women.

There’s another chance to snag between 45 and 51 spots at the second qualifier in Bangkok from May 23 to June 3. But in Bangkok, only nations that haven’t already won a spot in a certain weight class at their own regional qualifier or the first global event can try for one with a single fighter in those specific classes.

Delhi Challenger ATP 75

The India tour’s next stop is Delhi after Pune, and local singles players are eager to perform well to earn crucial points. The Delhi Open, a tennis event scheduled for February 26 to March 3, will be hosted at the RK Khanna Tennis Complex in New Delhi.

This ATP Challenger 75 tournament returns in 2024 after a break since 2016, with a prize fund of $82,000 (₹68 lakh), which is 64% more than eight years prior. The champion of the Delhi Open will take home not just 75 ranking points but also a prize of $11,200 (₹9 lakh), which is 55.6% more than the winner’s earnings in 2016.

Winter Deaflympics 2024

The 2024 Winter Deaflympics are scheduled for February 18–28, 2024, in Ankara, Turkey. The International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) is responsible for organising the Deaflympics, an international multi-sport competition for athletes who are deaf. Just with the Summer and Winter Olympics, they take place every four years.

Originally planned for March 2023, the games were moved to the following year by the South Asian Olympic Council members during a meeting in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This will be Pakistan’s third time hosting the games, following 1989 and 2004. It’s also the first time the event will occur outside of Islamabad.

2024 Women’s Euro Hockey League

The 2024 Euro Hockey League will mark the fourth time Europe’s top women’s club field hockey tournament is held, hosted by the European Hockey Federation. The previous champions, Den Bosch, won’t compete this year even though they claimed the title in 2023. This time, matches will take place at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands, from March 28 to April 1, with Pinoké and Amsterdam serving as hosts.

It will run simultaneously with the men’s Final 8 event. The league will feature 8 teams representing 6 out of the 45 member associations in the European Hockey Federation. These spots are given based on the performance of these associations in European field hockey from the 2020 to 2023 seasons.

2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championships

Belgrade, Serbia will be the stage for the World Athletics Cross Country Championships on March 30, 2024. The event will unfold at Friendship Park by the Danube River, a spot known for the 2013 European Championships. The competition was supposed to happen in Medulin and Pula, Croatia on February 10 and 11, 2024, but plans fell through due to not being ready in time.

On September 15, 2023, the organizers decided to move the championship to a different location, which remained a secret at first. Later, on September 27, 2023, Belgrade got the green light to host. The city earned its reputation by smoothly handling other major track events, including the 1962 and 2013 European Championships, the 2017 European Indoor Championships and Balkan Championships, and the 2022 World Indoor Championships.
