Rafael’s Nadal’s extraordinary numbers at the ATP 1000 Italian Open

The clay season is in full swing at in the 2023 ATP Tour season and with it comes the second European Masters 1000 clay tournament of the year, the Italian Open which will be held in Rome. The most successful player of the tournament today is none other than the king of clay himself, Rafael Nadal. It is quite incredible how one man has had such an immense dominance over a single surface for the past two decades, so much so that he has smashed every record possible on that surface. People usually call Nadal the king of clay due to his exploits at the French Open, but one must not forget how good the Spaniard is on clay across all tournaments.

The Spaniard has won the tournament, played the most finals, the most matches, the most consecutive finals, and he has won more matches than anyone else. Although it is uncertain whether Rafa will be a part of the 2023 Italian Open, there is no doubt that the king of clay will do everything in his power to be in as good shape as possible ahead of the season’s Roland Garros. With that in mind, here is a look at the stats of the king of clay in Rome.

Most tournament wins – 10

Rafael Nadal has won the French Open 10 times so far in his world class career. His first win in the tournament came almost 20 years ago in 2005 when he beat Argentinian tennis player Guillermo Coria 6–4, 3–6, 6–3, 4–6, 7–6(8–6) in a memorable final. His latest success in the Italian Open came as recently as 2021 when he defeated arch rival Novak Djokovic 7–5, 1–6, 6–3 in the final.

Most finals – 12

Winning the most titles means that the player has to be one who has played the most finals and that is the case for Rafa. He is tied on 12 in this statistic to Novak Djokovic. Out of the 12 finals he has played, Nadal has won 10 and lost only two, which just shows how great a player he truly is on clay. Both of his losses came against Djokovic who has won the tournament six times so far in his career. His two defeats came in 2011 and 2014.

Most consecutive finals – 3

Unsurprisingly, Nadal has won more consecutive titles than anybody at the Italian Open with three to his name, that too during the early days of his career. He first on the title against Guillermo Coria 6–4, 3–6, 6–3, 4–6, 7–6(8–6). Nadal won the title in 2006 and 2007, defeating Roger Federer 6–7(0–7), 7–6(7–5), 6–4, 2–6, 7–6(7–5) and Fernando Gonzalez 6–2, 6–2 respectively.

Most consecutive finals – 6

Rafael Nadal qualified for six straight finals in the Italian from 2009 to 2014. In that period, he won four of the six matches. His two defeats came against Novak Djokovic in 2011 and 2014, which are his only two final losses in the competition.

Most matches/Most match wins – 77/69

Nadal has played in 77 Italian Open matches until the 2022 edition of the tournament and he has won 69 of those. His win percentage is an extraordinary 89.61%. The Spaniard also holds he record for most consecutive matches won in the tournament’s history with 17.
