Hockey Stats: Nations that have won the Women’s Hockey Junior Asia Cup

The Women’s Hockey Junior Asia Cup is an international under-21 field hockey tournament organized by the Asian Hockey Federation. The tournament has been held since 1992 and is a qualification tournament for the Junior World Cup. China is the defending champion winning the 2015 edition. In 2023, the tournament is held in Kakamigahara in Japan. The top three teams of the tournament will qualify for the 2023 Women’s FIH Hockey Junior World Cup in Santiago, Chile.

2023 Women’s Hockey Junior Asia Cup

The 2023 Women’s Hockey Junior Asia Cup will be the eighth edition of the Women’s Hockey Junior Asia Cup. It is the women’s international under-21 field hockey championship in Asia. The tournament is organized by the Asian Hockey Federation. The venue of the tournament has been decided as Kakamighara in Japan. The last time Japan was decided as the official host, the entire tournament was cancelled due to Covid 19.

This year with the tournament going on in full throttle, India will be hopeful to clinch the title. India has finished in third place on many occasions in the past. The women in blue will look to win the tournament this time after trying hard on numerous occasions. The recent performance of India against Chinese Taipei (11-0) gives a lot of hope to the people in the country for the win. Added to this is the mammoth win against Uzbekistan (22-0). In this edition of the Asia Cup, Indian player Annu has been the top scorer of the tournament.

The top two teams from Pool A and Pool B will qualify for the semi-finals of the continental hockey tournament while the remaining teams will play classification matches. Traditional heavyweight, South Korea has started the tournament in the best possible way. However, we should also keep an eye on the host nation, Japan. The country has experienced defeats on many occasions in the past. However, after the performance against Kazakhstan (8-0), the Japanese team can be hopeful to reach their maiden finals. In the semi-finals, Japan will face China while India will square off against South Korea.

Over the years many teams have won the Asia Cup. South Korea is one of the heavy contenders for this tournament. It has won the title on 4 occasions in the past. It has also been the runner-up on one occasion during the 2004 Hockey Junior Asia Cup. Alongside South Korea, China has also been one of the dominant contenders in the tournament. Although the sport of hockey will never forget the teams who have won it on the pitch. Yet over the years some of the most fierce rivalries have come during the third-place matches. Although, the teams win the bronze medal yet the fight that they put up to win it has awed the audience and fans alike.
