Her passion for gymnastics was seen at just six years old after watching Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson. Her father supported her interest by building a homemade balance beam. She began formal training at the Midwest Gymnastics Center in Minnesota under coach Punnarith Koy. She rapidly advanced through different levels and qualified for elite gymnastics at 11.

In 2015, she competed in the Hopes division, advancing to junior elite in 2016. She made her junior elite debut at the 2016 U.S. Classic and joined the junior national team in 2017. That year, she made her international debut at the Gymnix International Junior Cup and contributed to the U.S. team’s gold medal. She verbally committed to Auburn University on a gymnastics scholarship. At the 2018 Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships, she won multiple medals, including the team gold medal.

Her senior international debut came at the 2019 City of Jesolo Trophy in Italy, where she claimed the all-around and team gold medal. At her first World Championships in 2019, she was instrumental in securing team gold for the United States. At the Tokyo Olympics 2020, where she clinched the individual all-around gold medal, beating Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade and Angelina Melnikova of the ROC. Her historic win was celebrated in Minnesota, with a dedicated “Sunisa Lee Day.” In 2023, she made a successful comeback at the U.S. Classic and Championships, continuing to impress in her gymnastics career.
