3M Open Stats: Golfers who have claimed the prestigious event

The 3M Open is a professional golf event in Minnesota, hosted by the prestigious PGA Tour. The tournament, which is sponsored by local firm 3M, takes place at TPC Twin Cities, located in the suburban area of Blaine, to the north of Minneapolis. The PGA Tour officially announced the launch of the tournament in June 2018. As a result, the inaugural event took place from July 4 to 7, 2019. The 3M Open has been a regular event of the PGA Tour’s calendar since its inception and serves as one of the critical competitions leading up to the FedEx Cup playoffs.

The 3M Open succeeded the 3M Championship, which was a significant event on the PGA Tour Champions circuit for over a quarter of a century (1993–2018). The Championship made TPC Twin Cities its home back in 2001, following its inception 30 years prior in 1993 as the Burnet Senior Classic. The initial venue was the Bunker Hills Golf Course situated in nearby Coon Rapids. After eight years, the competition shifted to the recently established TPC Twin Cities in 2001, coinciding with 3M becoming the primary sponsor.

In 2017, the total prize fund is set at $1.75 million, with the winner receiving $262,500. The Championship was also notable for its “Greats of Golf Challenge,” an exhibition match on the tournament’s Saturday that showcased teams of both male and female hall of famers and past major champions. The 2018 iteration of the 3M Championship was the tournament’s final year since an announcement was made that year stating it would be replaced by the 3M Open on the PGA Tour commencing in 2019. The winner of the 3M Championship’s last edition was Kenny Perry, who clinched his third win at the tournament on August 5, 2018.

The Format

The 3M Open unfolds over four days, with a cut applied to the pool of participating players. Initially, a group of 156 competitors will participate, but the number will subsequently narrow down to the leading 65, along with those tied for positions, for the tournament’s closing two rounds. After the 72-hole competition, the player with the lowest score is declared the champion.

The 2023 edition of the 3M Open

The fifth iteration of the 3M Open is scheduled to begin on Thursday, July 27, hosted at the TPC Twin Cities situated in Blaine, Minnesota. The tournament will continue until July 30, 2023. This year, the event serves as the penultimate competition on the PGA Tour schedule before the FedEx Saint Jude Championship. Numerous popular golfers such as Tony Finau, Cameron Young, Sungjae Im, Hideki Matsuyama, and Justin Thomas will be vying for a winners purse of $1.404 million from a total pot of $7.8 million and to acquire valuable FedEx Cup points.
