Wolves vs Manchester United: What did Gary O’Neil not like about his team’s performance?

It was heartbreak for Wolverhampton Wanderers as they conceded a late goal against Manchester United to lose the action-packed Premier League contest 4-3 on Thursday night. A game filled with plenty of emotions saw Wolves overcome a massive deficit in the second period, only to lose it in the end. Man United thoroughly dominated the first half and took a 2-0 lead. However, the home side fought back twice in the second period to make it 3-3.

With barely minutes left in the match, the Premier League contest looked to be heading for a draw. However, Manchester United found a way, thanks to Kobbie Mainoo’s sensational winner deep into injury time, leaving the Wolverhampton Wanderers’ players and supporters heartbroken. After the game, Gary O’Neil expressed his satisfaction with the fight shown by his players but also spoke about his displeasure with other aspects of the performance.

First half got away from us: Gary O’Neil

“I was proud of what they produced. Effort, quality, togetherness. Loads of it. Bundles of bundles of it. But I was disappointed with some of it. The first half got away from us and we didn’t really stick to what we do, we were aggressive and left ourselves far too open and got punished. But the second half was an incredible performance. I thought we were excellent and completely dominated. We had complete control apart from a couple of counter-attacks from them, so it was just a couple of details really. But we learn from every time we work together, every time we play, there’s things we can learn,” O’Neil, quoted on the club’s website, said after the match.

After a disappointing first half, Wolves improved their performance in the second period, with the manager revealing the changes they made at the break. “We managed to correct a few errors. We went through some tactical stuff yesterday, but we struggled to execute it first half. There was just some reminders at half time and showed them some clips around what we were supposed to be doing, but we needed to get back to what we were. The second half was much more what we wanted and we had enough quality as well,” he explained.

Even though the manner in which Wolves lost the game might have left a lot of their fans heartbroken. However, O’Neil was happy with some of the things did by his players. He also spoke about the areas where the team needs to improve. “The corner goal was really disappointing, as it just comes from an error from us, and to concede from the throw-in at the end was really tough for the boys to take. It was just not how we defend a throw,” he stated.

The manager added: “Whether the lads have got caught up in the emotion at that point, it just doesn’t look like us. There were some bits that were disappointing but I’m sure everyone enjoyed it. It was a big effort from us and another fantastic game. We look a really good side at times, but we just need to tidy up a couple of bits, try to improve and keep pushing. We don’t have much time to dust ourselves down for the next one.”
