Iran vs Japan: Asian Cup 2023/24 Live Stream, Form Guide, Head to Head, Schedule, Fixture and Probable Lineups

In the quarterfinals of the ongoing tournament, Iran and Japan, who previously faced each other in the 2019 Asian Cup semi-finals, are set to clash at Education City Stadium this Saturday. In the previous round, Team Melli endured a tense match against Syria, ending in a 1-1 draw but securing advancement through a penalty shootout. Meanwhile, the Japanese secured a 3-1 victory over Bahrain to secure their spot in the quarterfinals.

Despite facing a team ranked 70 places below them by FIFA, Iran had a tough time breaking through Syria’s solid defense in the previous round. Despite firing 12 shots on target, they had to rely on penalty kicks to secure their spot in the quarter-finals. This Saturday marks their eighth consecutive appearance at this stage, with their only prior success being a 3-0 victory over China in 2019. Coach Amir Ghalenoei’s team had a strong goal-scoring record before the tournament, but they’ve struggled in recent games, scoring only once or less in two of their last three matches. Iran hasn’t lost to an Asian team since March 2022, boasting 12 wins in their last 13 regional matches. Their last victory over Japan dates back over 18 years to a 2-1 win in March 2005 during World Cup qualifying.

Japan rebounded from a surprising 2-1 loss to Iraq on matchday two, winning convincingly in their subsequent two games. Since a 2-1 defeat against Colombia in March of the previous year, that remains their sole loss in regular time. Scoring three goals in each of their last two matches, Japan, after a slim win against Iraq, has found the net multiple times in 13 of their last 14 games. Securing a spot in the quarterfinals is routine for Japan, accomplishing it in eight consecutive Asian Cups, with only two losses in 1996 and 2015. They’ve conceded in just two of their last five knockout fixtures at the Asian Cup, with one being an own-goal against Bahrain in the recent round of 16. Having an impressive record against Iran, Japan is undefeated in six of their last seven encounters, including a 3-0 victory in the Asian Cup semi-finals four years ago.
