EPL stats: Which clubs have registered the most long balls in Premier League era?

There are very few leagues that are as challenging as the Premier League in world football. The competitive nature of the English top flight makes it extremely hard for the teams involved in the competition, however, this makes it an exciting watch for the supporters. The level of the games is played at such a high level that there are no easy games in the division. The fast-paced nature of the league is not for everyone.

The ball keeps moving from one end of the box to another, as there is hardly any breathing space for the players during the matches. Besides, it is also a physical league, which demands a lot out of a player. One of the main reasons behind it is the frequent use of long balls. Quite often lower-half or mid-table sides resort to the long-ball tactics. They put long passes into the box as the attackers run all over the defenders, making it extremely challenging for the defending sides to deal with them.

Which club has registered the most long balls?

The team that has registered the maximum number of long balls in the Premier League history is Everton with 40,167 long balls, as per the premierleague.com (some stats are only available since 2006-07 season). It is not a surprise to see Everton topping this table. The blue half of Merseyside are known for defensive resolve in the league over the years. They have had full-backs racing down the flanks, crossing the balls from the touchline or from way outside the penalty box.

Second position is occupied by Liverpool. It is a bit surprising to note that the top two positions in this table is occupied by Merseyside clubs. The Reds have not been able to replicate their historical dominance in the Premier League for long periods. However, things have started to change for good following Jurgen Klopp’s arrival in recent years. They have put 39,581 long passes during the Premier League era.

Manchester United are placed fourth
