EPL stats: Which clubs have missed the most number of big chances in 2022-23 Premier League season?

With the 2022-23 Premier League season done and dusted, it is time to look back at some of the noteworthy data from the campaign. The league crown was won by Manchester City following a long-fought battle with second-placed Arsenal. Clubs such as Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion booked European tickets, something not many anticipated at the start of the campaign. Some teams have flourished, while others like Liverpool and Chelsea endured forgettable seasons.

The action-packed nature continued throughout the division, with a lot to fight for until the final whistle was blown on the last matchday. Even though goals flourished over the course of the campaign, it is something few teams were not able to manage on a consistent basis, thereby causing their own downfall. A lot of talk has already taken place about the number of goals that has been scored. Hence, let us look at the amount of big chances that has been missed in the 2022-23 Premier League season.

Which club missed the most number of big chances?

No club has missed more big chances than Liverpool in the recently concluded Premier League season. Jurgen Klopp’s side missed 78 big chances in the 2022-23 league campaign. Liverpool have still scored a total of 75 goals in the EPL this season, which is a pretty impressive figure in a 38-game campaign. However, they have also missed a good number of opportunities, which otherwise could have helped them finish in the top four places of the Premier League table.

Second in the list is Liverpool’s old foe Manchester United. Erik ten Hag’s side have been quite impressive this campaign, as they outperformed a lot of expectations to finish third in the Premier League table and win the EFL Cup along with it. However, there is one problem that they have been facing throughout the season, which is the number of goals being scored. The Red Devils have found the back of the net only 58 times from 38 league matches, not what many would expect from a side that finished third in the table. These numbers could have been a lot different had United not missed 71 big chances over the course of the league season.

Which are the other big clubs in the list?

Current Premier League champions Manchester City have missed 70 big chances. It did not matter much in the end, as Pep Guardiola’s side ended with the league crown anyway. Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United missed 69 big chances each. There are also places for Arsenal and Chelsea in this table.
