The recently concluded Premier League season had many surprises and shocks, as the supporters witnessed another action-packed campaign. Lesser-fancied clubs had memorable season, finishing well above their expectations. The same cannot be said for some reputed big names, which underperformed massively in the term. In fact, it was a big surprise to see clubs like Leicester City and Southampton get relegated to second division. With the new season a month away, let us look at one of the interesting stats from the past campaign.
Which club made the most backward passes?
The team at the top of the list is champions Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side made a total of 4,236 backward passes during the course of the 2022-23 Premier League season. It was a historic year in many regards for the blue half of Manchester, as they had gone on to win a treble. For a while, it did not look like that was going to happen, considering the difficult challenges they faced along the road. Man City had to overcome tricky scenarios to win the FA Cup and the Champions League.
However, their most difficult challenge came in the Premier League. For most parts of the campaign, Man City were chasing Arsenal for the top spot. Towards the business end of the season when the Gunners slipped, City took advantage of it to leapfrog them in the table, which they held on to win the title. It is also not a surprise to see City at the top of this table since Guardiola’s side are known for their possession-based football, which allows them to keep the ball lot more than their opponents.
Liverpool are second with 3,416 backward passes. The Reds had a disappointing campaign, which saw them finish outside the top four positions in the league. They were also knocked out of the cup competitions in earlier rounds. Third place is occupied by Brighton & Hove Albion with 3,374 passes backward. Just like Man City, Brighton also created a reputation for keeping the ball, hence it is not a surprise to see them at the top end of this table.
Which are the other big clubs?
Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal occupied the fourth, fifth and sixth spots in this list. The Blues had a miserable campaign, as they missed out on a top half finish. On the other hand, Man United and Arsenal qualified for the Champions League comfortably.
