EPL stats: The best and worst results of the Premier League ‘big six’

The Premier League today is comprised of six clubs that are considered to be elite at the highest level of European football. There are a number of factors that make these six clubs ‘big’. Recent form, history, trophies, players and managers ae all deciding elements for the same. The clubs in question are Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur. City currently enjoy most of the success out of the six, with the likes of United and Arsenal gradually coming back to the fold at the top of the table. Liverpool and Chelsea have tasted success recently despite being far below where they should be in 2023. When it comes to Spurs, their form in the recent years, especially reaching the final of the Champions League in 2019 put them on the map in the modern footballing world.

However, things haven’t always been champion-like for these clubs, as expected. They have all fallen on hard times, especially United and Arsenal, and have had to deal with some distressing results. While the clubs have enjoyed great results and unmatched successes, there have been times when the result of matches have been quite unflattering. With that in mind, here are the best and worst results of every top six Premier League club.

Manchester United

Manchester United do not just have one best result in the Premier League, they have two. The first came in the 20th century when they faced Ipswich town in 1995. With Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm, the club was creating an era that perhaps would be remembered as the greatest in the history of the tournament and they showed exactly what they were about on the day. United drubbed Ipswich 9-0 with Andy Cole scoring six goals in a single match. Since then, the record had not been equaled until 2022, and it was United themselves that did it. The score line was the same and this time, it came with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the wheel.

While those results might be the biggest ever in the history of the Premier League, United’s worst ever loss will perhaps sting more than their greatest ever match victories, and it was as recent as this year. The team capitulated against Liverpool in the second half of the 2023 season, despite being on a stunning run under Erik Ten Hag. They lost 7-0 at Anfield, and it will go down as a dark day in the club’s history.

Liverpool

The Reds might not be having the best of results but they certainly registered two of their biggest ever wins in 2023. One was the 7-0 drubbing of arch rivals Manchester United and the biggest win was a 9-0 annihilation of Bournemouth in August, 2022 at Anfield. The team had six different scorers on the day with Luis Diaz and Roberto Firmino both scoring braces. However, both results did little to make the season any better for the 19-time league champions as they look certain to miss out on Champions League football come the end of the season.

The Reds fell on tough times in 2020 when they conceded seven goals against Aston Villa and scored only two. Ollie Watkins scored a hatrick for Villa and Jack Grealish bagged a brace. Mo Salah also scored a brace for Liverpool but it was in vain as they fell to their heaviest defeat ever. Liverpool had lost by five goals before as well when they fell 6-1 to Stoke City in 2015.

Arsenal

Much like United, Arsenal’s best winning score line came twice in their long history as a Premier League club. The first one was in 2005, when the Gunner’s had perhaps one of the best teams to have ever existed in the league. The score line was 7-0 and the opponent was Everton. French legend Robert Pires bagged a brace in the fixture. That very season, Arsenal met out the same punishment to Middesbrough in a match that saw Thierry Henry score a hatrick.

The Gunners were defeated 8-2 at Old Trafford by Manchester United which was their most embarrassing result ever. Robin Van Persie, who would later switch to the Red Devils, scored one of the consolation goals for Arsene Wenger’s team.

Chelsea

The Blues put Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa to the sword by a score of 8-0 in 2010 and 2012 respectively. It is by far their best result which saw Frank Lampard score in both fixtures.

The 2019 season was a tough one for the Blues as, along with a slew of problems, they faced their heaviest loss against Manchester City. The result on the day was 6-0 and till today, it is something Chelsea fans have not been able to put behind.

Manchester City

Many believe that we are living in the era of Manchester City in the Premier League and they have a very valid point. In the past decade, City have been absolutely outstanding, and their greatest ever win came during this period against Watford in 2019. The men in blue won the match 8-0 thanks to a hatrick from Bernardo Silva. City were up 5-0 in just 18 minutes.

Despite their form of late, the men in blue have not always been in this form. In fact, City used to be a club often battling to stay in the top flight of English football. Their worst ever defeat came in the year 2008 when they were humbled 8-1 by Middlesbrough.

Tottenham Hotspurs

Tottenham’s best ever result in the Premier League came in the year 2009 when they hammered Wigan Athletic 9-1 to become one of the very few clubs to score nine goals against their opponents in the Premier League. Their worst defeat was way back in 1996 when they lost 7-1 to Newcastle United. The men in black and white did come close to levelling that record when they beat Spurs 6-1 in 2023.
