Champions League stats: Which clubs have scored the most headed goals in the 2022-23 UCL season?

It is not a surprise to see Italian clubs top the headed goals chart in the current Champions League season. Teams in Serie A are known for their physical style of play combined with solid defensive base. They are always a handful for any team to defend against. Keeping that in mind it is not surprising to see two Serie A outfits – Napoli and AC Milan – are placed in the top three positions. Both have had noticeable outings in this season’s Champions League, as they have gone deep in the tournament.

Italian clubs dominate the table

Napoli got eliminated in the quarter-final, while AC Milan are currently competing in the semi-final stage. Sitting at the top of the pile is Napoli with seven headed goals from 10 matches. They have been supremely effective in the competition right from the start. Napoli, who recently won the Serie A title, was one of the dark horses of the Champions League this season. Their style of play and quick closing down was a treat to watch for neutral supporters as well as their own fans.

Second in the list is shared by another Italian outfit, AC Milan, and Portuguese side Benfica. They both have registered five headed goals each in the competition till now. Benfica are also out of the competition so it will be interesting to see if Milan can leapfrog the rest to take the top spot in this table. To do that though AC Milan need to stage a massive comeback against local rivals Inter Milan in the second leg of the semi-final. Juventus is the third Italian side in this list with three headed strikes to their name.

There are also couple of Premier League clubs in this list. Tottenham Hotspur are placed fourth with four headed goals to their name from eight matches. Liverpool are sixth in this table with three headed strikes from eight games as well. Both these clubs got eliminated in the first knockout round itself yet the number of headed goals they have managed in this competition is quite decent. This shows the variety of avenues through which they are capable of scoring goals.

Three Spanish clubs in this list too

There are a total of three Spanish outfits present in this list. Sevilla are placed fourth with four headed goals. They have impressively managed it in just six games. Real Madrid and Barcelona have three headed goals to their names so far in this competition. Barca got knocked out in the group stage itself, however, Real are still in the semi-finals, hence they will back themselves to improve upon these numbers.
