Champions League stats: Which clubs have kept the most clean sheets in 2022-23 UCL season?

The current Champions League season is coming to a conclusion as there are only a couple of games left for the remaining teams. With only four sides left in the competition, the battle to reach the final has heaten up. All the clubs are done with the first leg of the semi-final. Manchester City and Real Madrid played out a 1-1 draw in Spain, while Inter Milan defeated local rivals AC Milan 2-0. With the second leg set to happen in a week’s time, fans can expect to witness another round of action-packed encounters.

It is often the attacking players that get the credit in football, however, a team cannot simply win a game by one player. The contribution of the entire side is a must, especially that of the defenders. Not always a team has the ball in a game hence it is extremely important for them to defend as a unit. Like the old saying goes, “attack wins matches and defence wins championships,” is true with the current campaign as well. Hence, it is not surprising to see the teams that have reached this far in the current Champions League season are good defensively.

Which club has kept the most clean sheets in 2022-23 UCL season?

There are two clubs that have kept the maximum number of clean sheets in the 2022-23 Champions League season. They are Serie A giants Inter Milan and Bundesliga side Bayern Munich. They both have kept seven clean sheets each in the competition till now. Bayern have been knocked out in the quarter-final stage, therefore Inter could overtake their tally in the remaining fixtures if they can continue to maintain their defensive stability. Inter are in a pretty good position against AC Milan after the first leg, hence they would be keen to continue that form into the reverse leg next week.

Next up is Premier League champions Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side are being labelled by many as the favourites to lift the trophy and so far, they have lived up to the expectations quite well. They have secured a valuable draw in Spain and will back themselves to complete the job in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium. One of the hall marks of their success this season is their strong defensive base. Man City have kept six clean sheets from 11 matches and they will hope to maintain this defensive structure in the second leg as well.

All four semi-finalists have good defensive record

Defending champions Real Madrid and Serie A outfit AC Milan have kept five clean sheets each so far in the competition. They both have difficult tasks at hand to overcome the deficit in the second leg of the tournament. Either way, this list proves that how important role a solid defence plays to a team’s success. It is not surprising to see all four semi-finalists occupying the top positions in the chart.
