Brentford news: What did goalkeeper Mark Flekken say about his stunning assist for Neal Maupay?

It has been a challenging start for Mark Flekken at Brentford this season. The 30-year-old goalkeeper had joined the Premier League outfit from German club SC Freiburg last summer. The Netherlands international was expected to be a key part of Brentford’s setup this season and has been a regular on the pitch for Thomas Frank’s side. Having said that, it has not been an easy transition, with the goalkeeper experiencing both highs and lows till now at the club.

However, Mark Flekken showed his potential in their last game, producing an impressive performance to make life difficult for defending champions Manchester City in a Premier League contest. Even though Brentford lost the match 3-1, the display of Flekken has been met with a lot of praise, with the goalkeeper making multiple saves during the game. The Dutchman felt that he had finally “adapted” to the league.

“You just keep going to the next one; you don’t start counting during the game. It feels like I’ve finally adapted to the league and found my place. I’ve got back to the level I used to be before my transfer to Brentford. It finally fits together, all of the pieces, and that feels good. It feels good to finally be able to show what kind of keeper I can be,” Flekken, quoted on the club’s website, said.

There were lots of positives to take from Flekken’s performance against Manchester City. He made himself big in between the sticks, as City struggled to score past him. He regularly kept making saves to frustrate the away supporters. Not only his saves but Flekken’s distribution was also praised. Notably, the 30-year-old produced an incredible assist for Neal Maupay’s opener against City with a pin-point long ball.

An assist is not something that many commonly see from a goalkeeper, which makes it even more special for Flekken. “I started as an outfield player in my youth, as that has helped a lot over the years. It’s just about training it and developing it. It’s developed to be a big part of my play, like everyone can see on the pitch. I hope to help my team by being as efficient as possible and that one was quite efficient today,” he explained.

Flekken then went into detail explaining how the goal for Maupay had arrived. “We spoke before the match about Ivan [Toney] finding the position, and we had some footage of David [Raya] and Ivan from last year when they did the same, just to get out of the pressure and the man-marking. I felt like he found the right position to open up the gap and Neal ran into the space. With a little bit of wind behind me it got far enough for the assist,” he added.
