JaVale McGee finds a new home in Sacramento after Mavericks’ waiver

Two days after being waived by the Dallas Mavericks, veteran center JaVale McGee has reportedly signed with the Sacramento Kings. This move comes as the Kings aim to bolster their roster following a playoff appearance, while McGee seeks a fresh start and an opportunity to contribute to a rising team. The signing provides the Kings with added depth in the frontcourt, particularly behind All-Star big man Domantas Sabonis.

Just a year ago, the Dallas Mavericks signed JaVale McGee to a three-year contract with the intention of having him as a starting center. Early in the season, McGee indeed started in seven of the first nine games. However, his role gradually diminished as the season progressed and he eventually fell out of the rotation. This limited his playing time and the Mavericks struggled to make the playoffs missing out on postseason action after reaching the Western Conference Finals the previous year. A midseason trade to bring Kyrie Irving to Dallas alongside All-Star Luka Doncic failed to provide the desired spark although the team did re-sign Irving during the offseason.

McGee’s recent performance

During the 2022-23 season, JaVale McGee averaged 4.4 points and 2.5 rebounds in 42 games while wearing a Mavericks uniform. Despite his limited role in Dallas, it’s worth noting that the 35-year-old center had a productive season with the Phoenix Suns in 2021-22. During that campaign, he averaged 16 minutes per game across 74 appearances including 17 starts as the Suns reached the second round of the playoffs.

McGee’s accomplishments and championship experience

JaVale McGee is a veteran of the NBA with an impressive track record. He is a three-time NBA champion, having won twice with the Golden State Warriors as a backup center before starting 68 regular-season games for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2019-20 season. Notably, he played a pivotal role in the Lakers’ successful campaign that year although he didn’t feature in the NBA Finals when the Lakers defeated the Miami Heat in the playoff bubble.

JaVale McGee’s move to the Sacramento Kings signifies a new chapter in his career and provides the Kings with valuable frontcourt depth. While his time with the Dallas Mavericks didn’t go as planned. McGee’s experience and championship pedigree make him a valuable asset for any team. As the Kings look to build upon their recent playoff appearance and aim for greater success. They will rely on McGee to contribute his skills and expertise to their roster.
