Indonesia Masters 2024 Badminton Day 2 Report

Kiran George from India battled through two tough matches in the qualifying rounds to secure his spot in the main singles event at the 2024 Indonesia masters badminton competition in Jakarta on Tuesday. He showed real determination, carrying over his winning ways from clinching the Polish International championship.

Kiran has also played in big events like the 2020 Thomas Cup and the 2022 Badminton Asia Team Championships. However, there was a surprise change when India’s top men’s doubles team, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, ranked number one in the world, pulled out of the BWF Super 500 events.

After reaching the finals in Malaysia and India, they opted out of competing in the Indonesia Masters. With a world ranking of 36, Kiran George triumphed in his first match by defeating Indonesia’s Shesar Hiren Rhustavito with scores of 21-17, 12-21, 21-15. He narrowly defeated the 45th ranked player, Alex Lanier, with scores of 12-21, 21-18, 22-20 in a close match.

Rhustavito, ranked 63rd, put up a good fight but George pushed through to victory in 52 minutes. Lanier gave George a tougher challenge in the next qualifier. After defeating Dutch player Mark Caljouw, Lanier took the lead in the first game against George. But George didn’t give up and won the second game, making the last game very tense.

After 64 intense minutes, George ended up winning.George will now join other Indian players like HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, and Priyanshu Rajawat in the main singles draw. Another Indian duo, MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila was supposed to play in the men’s doubles but also decided not to enter the tournament.

After finishing second in both the Malaysia and India Opens, the duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are aiming for their initial win of the season at the Indonesia Masters 2024, kicking off in Jakarta this Tuesday.

This Super 500 tournament is part of the BWF World Tour and fans back in India can catch the action via live stream or broadcast. Currently ranked world number two, Rankireddy and Shetty have good reason to look forward to playing in Jakarta; they clinched their first Super 1000 win there last year at the Indonesia Open, adding the Asian Games champions title to their accomplishments.
