Hong Kong Open 2023: How did India perform in the BWF Super 500 event?

The Indian representation at the Hong Kong Open 2023 concluded as the last contenders were defeated in the pre-quarterfinals. The event took place at the esteemed Hong Kong Coliseum in Kowloon, Hong Kong. The women’s doubles duo of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa faced a crushing defeat against the leading Japanese team, Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara, with a score of 18-21, 7-21. Notably, the team had entered the main draw after triumphing over fellow Indian players Sikki Reddy and Arathi Sunil with a margin of 16-21, 14-21.

Another promising Indian duo, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, who had shown potential with their bronze medal win at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, faced a similar outcome at the Hong Kong Open 2023. They lost to the Indonesian pair, Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti, by 8-21, 14-21, marking their exit from the tournament. Before that, they had previously defeated the Dutch pair of Cheryl Seinen/ Debora Jille by 21-15, 16-21, 21-16.

Withdrawal of Lakshya Sen

In the singles category, a significant setback was the unexpected withdrawal of top player and the Commonwealth Games 2022 Lakshya Sen champion, which gave his opponent Chinese Taipei, Su Li Yang, an automatic advantage as he gave him a walkover. Sen was one of the top seeds in the singles category for India in the Hong Kong Open 2023, as other prominent players like PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, and Kidambi Srikanth had opted out.

End of India’s singles players and doubles campaign

Unfortunately, other Indian singles players like Priyanshu Rajawat, Aakarshi Kashyap, and Malvika Bansod couldn’t progress past the initial matches. Rajawat was defeated by Kanta Tsuneyama in straight sets by 13-21, 14-21. Kashyap lost to Germany’s Yvonne Li by 18-21, 10-21 in the Round of 32. Bansod faced a straight-set defeat against Zhang Yiman in the same round, with a margin of 14-21, 12-21.

Concurrently, mixed doubles teams like Sikki Reddy/ Rohan Kapoor and Krishna Prasad Garaga/ Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala also wrapped up their Hong Kong Open 2023 journey. Rohan and Sikki, had to concede defeat to Singapore’s Terry Hee and Jessica Tan. They lost the match with scores of 19-21 and 10-21. On a similar note, the men’s doubles pair featuring Krishna and Vishnuvardhan faced a loss against the South Korean team of Ko Sung Hyun and Shin Baek Cheol. They lost with set scores of 14-21 and 19-21.
