Badminton Stats: What are the biggest achievements of India’s Men’s Doubles Pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty?

India has seen a resurgence in the shuttling world with many individual and paired shuttlers going and performing at their optimum at the top of their game. This has been a result of many factors. Some of them are- new-found talents, the change in the coaching ecosystem as well as bringing in foreign coaches. Many players in the Indian Badminton community benefited from this like Kidambi Srikanth, PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal. However, apart from these veterans, there are many new faces in the circuit who have impressed the coaches a lot.

Some of them like Lakshya Sen, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty and HS Prannoy etc have done exceedingly well. Out of them, perhaps the shuttlers who have impressed the coaches the most are the duo of Satwik and Chirag. The Indian pairing has got a plethora of achievements under their belt. This includes a win in the BWF Super 1000 and ranking inside the top 10. After the coming of coach Matthias Boe, the pair has performed marvellously in the international arena.

Some Notable Highlights

Although the pair has a lot of accolades and laurels to their credit, below is a list of some of their salient achievements:

Thomas Cup Win

Perhaps one of the most significant events in the career of any badminton player is to win the Thomas or the Uber Cup. The Thomas Cup is a biennial championship where India had no success before. However, this enigma was broken by the Men’s team in 2022 when they won their maiden title. There were many star performers, however, one of the main architects of this win has to be Satwik and Chirag.  In the finals, they displayed immense perseverance and tenacity to win the second game and close out the third game at 21–19, giving India a 2–0 lead over Indonesia.

Commonwealth Games

Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty played a crucial role in earning India medals in the Commonwealth Games time and again. In 2018, the pair played a crucial role in earning India a historic gold medal in the Mixed Team event. They then added the men’s double silver medal to it. The pair played with grit, but they could not defeat the English pair of Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge. Four years later, they repeated the same feat as they clinched the Men’s Doubles Gold and Mixed Team Silver in 2022 Birmingham. Rankireddy and Shetty won the men’s doubles gold at Birmingham by beating the home pair of Ben Lane and Sean Vendy in the final.

Likewise, Satwik and Chirag are probably among the few Indians who have the privilege of having a place in the top 10. The duo are ranked in their career-best rank of world no. 3 in the Men’s Doubles. This has come at the back of their perseverance and the day-in and day-out performances on the court. Under the aegis of Mathias Boe, the pair have achieved this very rare feat.

Indonesia Open 2023

2023 has been a very fruitful year, considering the pair have piled on two wins under their belt. The first came in the Swiss Open while the second one came in the Indonesia Open. Satwik and Chirag put out an attacking masterclass at the Istora Senayan courts in Jakarta to win the doubles title at the Indonesia Open. The duo scripted history by becoming the first Indian pair to win a Super 1000 badminton title. The confidence of the duo can be seen in the post-match interview. “From just getting an entry to play at Istora to now winning has been a long journey. But this is just the start, we have to win many more tournaments.”

Badminton Asia Championships

Satwik and Chirag have not only mesmerised fans across the world but also Asian fans as well. This has come at the back of their signature performances in the Asian championships. The duo are the defending champions of the Men’s Doubles Gold medal. In the finals, they defeated the Malaysian duo of Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi. The finals went down to the wire, as Satwik and Chirag had to battle it out in three sets (16-21, 17-21 & 19-21).
