World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24: Shot Put Preview

From March 1-3, the top track and field athletes will gather in Glasgow, Scotland, to compete in the World Athletics Indoor Championships. A massive group of 651 athletes from over 130 different countries will contend for international titles and show they’re in great shape ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. For three days, the indoor championships will feature 26 competitions, evenly split between women’s and men’s events.

Some of the world’s sports stars are set to challenge for the top three medals at the event, held at the 6,500-seat Emirates Arena in the Dalmarnock neighborhood of Glasgow. The women’s shot put event has three athletes who’ve each thrown over 20 meters this year. There’s Chase Jackson from the United States, who’s won two world titles; Sarah Mitton from Canada, who hasn’t lost a competition this year and has a world silver medal.

Moreover Jessica Schilder from the Netherlands, who’s thrown an impressive outright personal best of 20.31 meters recently will also participate. Jackson enters as a slight favorite, known for her clutch throws in major championships. She’s consistently tossed the shot put over 20 meters and has the longest personal best throw of the group with a 20.76-meter throw from a few months back.

Schilder is on a roll, having the field’s best indoor throw to her name. In 2022, she made a name for herself with indoor and outdoor world bronze medals and the European title. She wasn’t on the podium at last year’s World Championships but is gearing up for a strong 2024.

Then there’s Ryan Crouser from the USA, one of the all-time greats in shot put, heading to Glasgow with his sights set on his first indoor world title. Despite his past success, he knows he cannot be complacent. Crouser was beaten at the last event in Belgrade by Darlan Romani, even after setting a championship record.

However, Crouser has won the US indoor title this year with an impressive throw near the world indoor record he established in 2021. Romani, although not at his peak this season, is still a formidable contender, as one of ten men in the group who has thrown past 22 meters. Crouser knows he must perform well, as there’s no room for mistakes.

Last year, Leonard Fabbri took home a silver medal at the World Championships in Budapest, with a standout performance behind Crouser. Kicking off 2024 with impressive momentum, the Italian shot putter broke the national indoor record by hurling the shot put 22.37 meters. Joining him in showing strong early-year performances are Tom Walsh from New Zealand and Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell, both clearing throws over 22 meters.
