What is Sydney McLaughlin’s age, height, weight and more?

Sydney McLaughlin is one of the most talented sprinters and hurdlers to have emerged from the USA athletic system. Born in the suburbs of New Jersey, Sydney grew up in a family which boasted of tremendous athleticism within her family. Her father is a member of the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame as a three-time All-America. Interestingly, Sydney excelled both in academics as well as sports from a young age.

Sydney’s tremendous athleticism propelled her to a prosperous career from a young age. Subsequently, she made her debut back in 2016. Till now she has been an Olympic champion, back-to-back World Champion as well as Diamond League winner and the World Youth Champion. Furthermore, she holds the current world U20 record of 53.60 seconds. She also achieved a junior personal best of 52.75 seconds which was unfortunately not ratified. Interestingly, both the records were set in 2018.

Only two other women also broke the 52-second barrier and McLaughlin-Levrone is the only one who broke the 51-second barrier, leaving her with nearly one-second advantage on the world all-time list, the largest current difference between the world record and the next best performer in said track event. She holds six out of the nine fastest times on this list. She was the 2019 Diamond League champion. On the other hand, McLaughlin was voted as the World Athletics Female Athlete of the Year in 2022. In Paris 2024, she will be the defending champion of the 400 m hurdles and the 4×400 m relay and one of the key competitors in the track and field for Team USA.

Early Career of Sydney McLaughlin

Sydney McLaughlin started her sprinting career back in 2014 with the junior championships. In her first-ever race, Sydney was placed a close second behind Shamier Little in the 400-meter hurdles. Furthermore, she recorded a time of 55.63 seconds in the race. Interestingly, it was a national high school freshman record and a world record under the age bracket of 14 years. She then tried to represent the United States at the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships. Unfortunately, she was a year too young to be eligible. On the other hand, McLaughlin set a world age group best of 13.34 s in the 100-meter hurdles over 76.2 cm (2 ft 6 in) hurdles that summer.

Subsequently, in 2015, she improved her 400-meter hurdles best to 55.28 s at the national youth trials. At that time, she was aged 15 years and was arguably one of the best sprinters in the world. Furthermore, she was ranked second on the all-time world youth list behind Leslie Maxie’s world youth best and national high school record of 55.20 seconds. Maxie’s record was set way back in 1984.

She qualified for the World Youth Championships as well which was held in Cali, Colombia. Sydney displayed tremendous agility to clock at 55.94 seconds and clinch the gold medal. This catapulted her as the world youth and junior leader. In the following year, McLaughlin won the 400-m hurdles at the New Balance national outdoor high school championships. Subsequently, she went on to make her debut for the national team in the same year.
