Tajinderpal Singh Toor stats: What are the athlete’s top ten best throws?

Tajinderpal Singh Toor is an Indian shot putter who holds the outdoor Asian and national record of 21.77 m. He was born on 13 November 1994 in the Moga district of Punjab. Toor hails from a very humble background in the farming community. He has been an ardent sports fan throughout his life. He started his sporting journey with cricket. However, at the insistence of his father, he shifted his focus to the shot put.

In June 2017, Toor recorded his personal best outdoor throw of 20.40m at the Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championships in Patiala. Unfortunately, he fell short of the World Championships qualification standard of 20.50m. He rectified this mistake and won a silver medal the following month. Toor won the silver medal at the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar with a throw of 19.77m. The competition was a very tough one in Bhubaneshwar. In the final round, Toor missed out on the gold medal by just 0.03m. The first half of the next season was an unforgettable one for Tajinderpal Singh Toor. He had a disastrous Commonwealth Games campaign. Toor finished eighth in the final of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. His final throw from the Games was 19.42m.

After the disastrous campaign in the Commonwealth Games, Toor had a complete turnaround in the Asian Games of 2018. In August 2018, Toor won gold at the 2018 Asian Games with a 20.75 m throw. This broke the Games record and the national record. In the following year, he won the gold medal at the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships in Doha with a throw of 20.22 m.

Toor qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics by registering a throw of 21.49 m at the Indian Grand Prix IV in June 2021, clearing the 21.10 m entry standard. This throw also broke the national and Asian records. He was however injured before the important round. He competed with a heavily-bandaged shoulder at the Olympics. In the end, Toor registered only one legal throw of 19.99 m in qualifying and failed to reach the final round. At the 2022 Indian Open Nationals Toor was the best male athlete. Tajinderpal registered his personal best throw of 21.77 m in the Indian Championships. This record also happens to be the Asian and the National record. Nevertheless, with Asian Games and Paris Olympics around the corner, the Indian shot putter is going to be busy. Let us hope he brings more laurels to the nation.
